The imminence of becoming a super-aged society has made the importance of oral health care for the elderly more prominent. Frailty and oral frailty are frequently observed health problems among the elderly are, leading to dry mouth and decreased swallowing function. In line with such rapid demographic changes, some local communities have implemented integrated community care projects. This study is a nonequivalent control group pre/post quasi-experimental intervention study conducted to compare and measure the level of salivary amylase, tongue pressure, subjective and objective mouth dryness, and quality of life related to swallowing before and after a 6-week of exercise program in which some of the participants of Home Visit Oral Intervention Program of Cheonan-si’s Integrated Community Care Project carried out exercises to strengthen oral muscle function through video theory education and practice.
1. Homogeneity in all variables except for the general characteristics and non-stimulatory salivary flow of the intervention group and control group were confirmed. (p>0.05). 2. As a result of measuring changes in salivary amylase after 6 weeks of intervention, there was a significant interaction between the intervention group and time (F=0.035, p=0.852) without statistically significant difference between the intervention group and the control group. 3. A significant interaction between the intervention group and the time point was found for tongue pressure, showing a significant increase from before (M=17.75) and after (M=27.24) home visit oral health education intervention (F=66.478, p<0.001); however, there found no difference in the control group. 4. The 6-week home visit oral health education had a significant effect on the change in non-stimulatory salivary flow (p<0.001). The value of controlling non-stimulatory saliva estimated before the education increased significantly more in the intervention group (M=7.19) compared to that of the control group (M=5.04) (p<0.001). 5. A significant interaction between the intervention group and the time point was found for subjective mouth dryness (F=30.265, p<0.001). The intervention group showed a more significant decrease than the control group with a decrease from M=30.75 to M=18.50 (p<0.001). 6. As a result of analyzing the quality of life related to swallowing, there found a significant interaction between the intervention group and the time point (F=10.822, p=0.002). The intervention group showed a more significant increase from before the education (M=152.10) to after the education (M=171.50) compared to its counterpart.
In other words, the 6-week home visit oral health education was found to have significant effects on the elderly who participated in the integrated community care project, showing decreased mouth dryness and increased tongue pressure, non-stimulated saliva output, and swallowing-related quality of life. Therefore, active utilization of the oral health education intervention program for the elderly by local communities is highly expected to greatly contribute to improving and promoting oral and physical health of the elderly.
