The Purpose of this study was to find out the transformative participant experience of the middle-aged women in the public library book club program. This study aims to analyze the meaning behind the impact of the book club activity for middle-aged women who participated in the public library book club program by analyzing the participant experience in a practical context based on the theory of transformative learning and empirical learning. The research question to reach the goal of this study is ‘How did the participating experience of the middle-aged women in the public library book club program impact their lives?’. As the book club activity brings various experiences and training through books, it was considered a type of learning. The theoretical background reviewed for this is the theories of transformative learning and empirical learning of the learning theories. I analyzed the characteristics of the developmental stages of the subject study of middle-aged women and analyzed the transformational challenge that middle-aged women have of the participant experiences in the book club. Then, the idea and components of the book club were analyzed. Lastly, the historical flow of the library and how the functions and roles of public libraries have changed were analyzed and the library’s change of role in practical context was viewed. The qualitative analysis of participant experience in book club was analyzed according to the Grounded Theory. Therefore, the narratives of the participating experience of the middle-aged women in the book club were gathered and analyzed and the meaning was inductively extracted through those results. The participants of this study were 44 middle-aged women that participated in the K library book club program ‘Reading school for moms’. The data was collected from 12.02.2019 until 12.20.2019. Semi-Structured Interview and Focus Group Interview were practiced upon participants for the collection of data. Narratives of the participant experience collected through the Semi-Structured Interview were analyzed according to the procedures of Grounded Theory Strauss & Corbin (2008). The analyzing procedures were processed from the order of open-coding axis coding-select coding and the important semantic structure was interpreted and suggested. 210 ideas, 43 subcategories, and 20 categories were deduced from open coding the narratives of participant experience. From the study result, the final main category was summarized as 「The participant experience in a book club for middle-aged women provides opportunities for transformative experience along with a practical change in life through books」. To analyze the specific cases of the main category ‘The participating experience in a book club for middle-aged women provides opportunities for transformative experience along with a practical change in life through books’, 3 study participants were selected additionally for the Focus Group Interview. Focus Group Interview started on 1 October 2021 for one week. The transformative experience and practical change in middle-aged women’s life from participant experience of the book club were analyzed in 5 categories. Firstly, the library book club enabled middle-aged women to keep on searching for a new path through books and awakened the motivation to live their lives with confidence and responsibilities. Secondly, after 3 years of the book club, they gained the confidence to establish a book club and take on the role of a leader. to select books and organize the meetings of people reading different books. Thirdly, as the book became a medium and the interaction between the club members was influenced positively, they continued to strengthen their abilities for their own lives. Fourthly, they started noticing social issues as their interest field broadened upon reading books and this, in turn, brought a practical change in their lives to participate and serve society. Fifthly, in addition to the above, they expanded their field to participate in society by organizing the self-growing ‘Social Cooperation’ based on the book club. This study is significant in analyzing the practical context of the participating experience of middle-aged women in the book club program. Previous book club or learning club studies were mainly focused on an individual’s growth and learning. Meanwhile, this study centered on the public library and provided the field for practical literacy for the public library to extend its role. This study is distinguished from other studies in that it shows a book club program model that promotes empowerment.
