The mediating effect of self-discrepancy on the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and self-silencing of undergraduate students원문보기

This study examined the effect of self-discrepancy on perfectionistic self-presentation of undergraduate students in the process of generating self-silencing. For this purpose, a self-report survey was conducted on undergraduate students, aging from 20 to 28, and data from 318 people were used for the final analysis. The research results are summarized as following. First, self-discrepancy has been shown to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and self-silencing. Second, self-discrepancy has been shown to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between the sub-factors of perfectionistic self-presentation ― perfectionistic self-promotion and self-silencing. Third, self-discrepancy has been shown to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between the sub-factors of perfectionistic self-presentation ― nondisplay of imperfection and self-silencing. Lastly, self-discrepancy has been shown to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between the sub-factors of perfectionistic self-presentation ― nondisclosure of imperfection and self-silencing. One solution for reducing self-silencing according to the results can be decreasing the level of self-discrepancy when the tendency of perfectionistic self-presentation is observed. In particular, among the sub-factors of perfectionistic self-presentation, nondisplay imperfection has the largest positive impact on self-discrepancy; therefore, it is meaningful in that presents a new point of intervention for undergraduate students who go through self-silencing due to nondisplay imperfection. The potential implications for clinical application and directions for follow-up studies are also proposed.
