The purpose of this study is to examine the mediation effect of father’s tolerance for risk-taking play between father’s attitudes toward injury and children’s participation in risk-taking play. The subjects of this study were 121 children aged 4~5 and their father living in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Daejeon, and four other cities. Father’s tolerance for risk-taking play and children’s participation in risk-taking play were assessed using the pictorial scale developed by Shin(2021) based on the Tolerance of Risk in Play Scale(TRiPs). Father’s attitudes toward injury was examined using Risk Engagement and Protection survey(REPs). The collected data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics, and the Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated. To analyze mediation effect among the variables, Three-step mediated regression analysis was performed as a hierarchical regression method in accordance with the verification procedure proposed by Baron and Kenny(1986). Also, SPSS PROCESS Macro Model 4 proposed by Hayes(2013) was conducted to directly verify the statistical significance of the mediator variable. The results are as follows: First, fathers are restrictive in tolerating risk-taking play. However, fathers tend to recognize that the developmental benefits of participating in risks are important, so should supervise their children's play and protect them from injuries. Father's attitude and tolerance did not differ according to the gender of the child. In addition, children's participation in risk-taking play showed low level in all subcategories for both boys and girls and there was no difference in children’s gender. Second, there was a positive correlation between father's tolerance for risk-taking play and boy and girl’s risk-taking play. In particular, in the case of a girls, there was a more significant correlation in both the overall and subcategories. Third, father’s tolerance for risk-taking play has a fully mediating effect in the relationship between injury protection, a subcategory of their father's attitude toward injury, and children's participation in risk-taking play. These results helped understanding about father variables related to children's participation in risk-taking play, and provide evidence to promote children's participation in risk-taking play.
