The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of parents' attitudes toward outdoor play and tolerance for risky play on children's participation in outdoor play and risky play and their physical literacy development. The subjects of this study were 230 children aged 5~7 and their parents living in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon. Parents’ attitude toward outdoor play was examined using Parental Attitude toward their Child's Outdoor Recreation(PACOR), and children's outdoor play participation was evaluated using the questionnaire constructed by the researcher. Parents’ tolerance for risky play and children’s participation in risky play were assessed using the pictorial scale developed by the researcher based on the Tolerance of Risk in Play Scale(TRiPs). Children's attitudes toward physical activity were investigated using Children's Attraction to Physical Activity(CAPA), and children's perceived motor competence was evaluated using the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence(PMSC). The collected data were analyzed using the frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, and independent sample t-test, and the Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated. To analyze structural relationships and mediation effect among the variables, Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) and bootstrapping technique were used. The results are as follows: first, the effect of mother's attitude toward outdoor play on children's attitude toward physical activity and perceived motor competence was fully mediated by children's participation in outdoor play. Father's attitude toward outdoor play and parents' tolerance for risky play did not have a significant effect on children's participation in outdoor play. Second, the effect of father's tolerance for risky play on children's attitude toward physical activity and perceived motor competence was fully mediated by children's participation in risky play. Mothers' tolerance for risky play had a positive effect only on children's participation in risky play, and parents' attitudes toward outdoor play or children's participation in outdoor play had no significant effect on children's participation in risky play. In conclusion, mothers’ supportive attitude toward outdoor play helps children participate more in outdoor play, and fathers’ tolerance for risky play encourages children’s participation in risky play, so that children can develop more positive attitude toward physical activity and perceive their motor competence higher. Therefore, to help children participate more in outdoor play and risky play, and develop physical literacy, it is important for mothers to have supportive attitudes toward outdoor play and fathers to show more tolerance towards risky play.
