The causes of juvenile delinquency are highly diverse and multidimentional, and there are several factors that may lead to the development of delinquency, such as sociological elements, family environments, physical and mental health, and other external aspects. Based on a review of previous studies on relevant factors, this study analyzes factors affecting juvenile delinquency, such as demographic and sociological factors, familial factors (domestic violence), online game addiction factors, stress factors, COVID-19 factors, and mental health factors. The purpose of this study is to present institutional and policy alternatives to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency in the future by empirically analyzing the determinants of juvenile delinquency. The subject of analysis in this study is adolescents enrolled in middle school and high school (humanities, specialized high schools, etc.). The self-report questionnaire was distributed online and offline for approximately four weeks from June 21 to July 19, 2021 for middle and high school students nationwide. For the offline (direct) survey, the questionnaire was directly distributed to and collected from 30 schools across the nation in accordance with the logic of judgment sampling and quota sampling, which are types of non-probability sampling. For the online survey, a Google questionnaire was prepared and the links to the questionnaire were distributed to adolescents via KakaoTalk and social media, through the support of national hospital staff, mental health welfare centers’ experts, school teachers, and staff of the Special School Teachers Association. As a result, a total of 1,542 questionnaires were retrieved, 1,072 offline and 470 online. This study employed frequency analysis, mean difference analysis, item reliability analysis, validity analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis as analytical methods. The overall results of the analysis are as follows. First, among family factors (domestic violence), it was found that the more frequent verbal violence between husband and wife takes place, the more frequent physical violence against children takes place, and the lower the level of parental support, the higher the level of juvenile delinquency. These family factors were found to have a high correlation with other factors overall. Second, in the case of online game addiction factors, the hypothesis that game addiction would affect juvenile delinquency was rejected. However, online game addiction factors were found to have a high correlation with other factors such as family factors, stress factors (education, economy, appearance, friends, teacher relationships), mental health factors (depression, aggression, suicidal ideation), juvenile delinquency (status, violence, property). Third, among the stress factors, economic (appearance) stress was shown to have a statistically significant positive (+) effect on status delinquency, violence, and property delinquency. On the other hand, academic stress was found to have a negative (-) effect on status delinquency, violence, and property delinquency. In the correlation analysis, academic stress was found to be highly correlated with all factors except for sexual level and violent property delinquency. Fourth, each individual variable related to the COVID-19 factor (intensification of conflict with parents, online game immersion, decrease in household income, decline in school performance, helplessness and depression) did not have a statistically significant effect on the level of juvenile delinquency, the dependent variable. However, it was demonstrated that among the factors of COVID-19, the deepening of conflict with parents and a decrease in the monthly household income level were highly correlated with the level of juvenile delinquency. Fifth, in the case of mental health factors, aggression and suicidal tendencies were found to have a significant impact on juvenile delinquency, similar to the results of previous studies. However, it was found that self-esteem did not have a statistically significant effect on juvenile delinquency. Sixth, among the socio-demographic factors, the level of delinquency among female students was found to be statistically significantly lower than that of male students. In addition, the statistics showed that the delinquency level of students in specialized schools was significantly higher than that of students in other schools, including public schools, for both status delinquency, violence, and property delinquency. The lower the sexual level, the higher the level of juvenile delinquency. It was also found that the simulated educational level rather than the wealth level had a statistically significant impact on juvenile delinquency. Combining the results above, factors such as family-related factors (domestic violence, parental support), stress factors (education, economy and appearance, teacher relationships), mental health factors (aggression, suicidal ideation, depression), and demographic and sociological factors (gender, school type, grade level, single-parent/single-grandparent families, maternal education level) were found to have either a positive or negative effect on the level of juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, it was found that online game addiction, academic stress, friend relationship stress, cognitive change due to COVID-19, depression, and lower self-esteem did not have a statistically significant impact on the increase in juvenile delinquency. Through the analysis of determinants of juvenile delinquency, this study seeks to suggest institutional and policy alternatives to reduce or prevent the level of juvenile delinquency, such as the establishment and reinforcement of cooperative governance such as the Youth Offending Team (YOT), which can be observed in the case of the United Kingdom, utilization of school holidays to help facilitate the establishment of a network of student counseling institutions between metropolitan areas and provincial areas, redesigning of policies for causal analysis of the link between online game addiction and juvenile delinquency, enhancement of awareness of appearance stress treatment for adolescents, and development of a predictive model for juvenile delinquency according to the mitigation of the pandemic, implementation of panel data analysis on the impact of COVID-19, and reinforcement of on-site consultations. It is hoped that the results of the analysis derived from this study will be instrumental in providing useful implications in the future design of countermeasures such as the prevention and response to juvenile delinquency, intervention in treatment, and establishment of a cooperative system between the respective ministries.
