A Study on the Scene Creation through Actors' Physical Training : Focused on Grotowski, Michael Chekhov, Vakhtangov and Uta Hagen원문보기

This study aims to construct the scenes through training processes in Grotowski, Michael Chekhov, Vakthangov, and Uta Hagen with the specific methods of role creation utilizing an actor’s body and to check the actual effect of role creation and the effectiveness on various training methodologies.
This study aims to construct the scenes through training processes in Grotowski, Michael Chekhov, Vakthangov, and Uta Hagen with the specific methods of role creation utilizing an actor’s body and to check the actual effect of role creation and the effectiveness on various training methodologies. The contemporary plays continue attempts to knock down the boundaries of play in combination with various fields to expand to get out of the limitations of representation of texts. For the birth of a creative actor for the flow of play, it is necessary to rediscover the actor’s body and explore it as a new style to call ‘the being’ on stage. The methodologies by Jerzy Grotowski, Michael Chekhov, Vakthangov, and Uta Hagen discussed in this study propose specific methodologies for actor training and focus on drawing psycho-physical behaviors. For a smooth understanding of them, this study would explore the formation process, main concepts, and practical training methods of each methodology and create roles through each of the training. Based on this, this study would create each scene to bind them as Experiment Gaze Ver. 4, check its effectiveness through a survey with an audience and promote the value of research based on the experimenters’ training methods and interviews. In the experiment, the actors participating in the performance became experimenters while training themselves according to each actor’s role. The scope set up by the author includes the concepts for training the actor's body as follows: Grotowski’s sacred actor through Via Negativa and Actuant (actor) in art as a means of delivery, Michael Chekhov’s creation and discovery of psychological gestures through imagination and image, Vakthangov’s grotesque acting in fantastic realism and narrative attitude, the representative element of his thought, and lastly, Uta Hagen’s memory of emotions, outdoor training, and conditional factors. As for the research method of this study, it was conducted through all processes from theory research through the selection and conception of works and training process to practice and performance, and the practice logs, training materials, and observation contents of the researcher and the participants as actors, and experimental results through an audience survey were used as research materials. In addition, in scene creation through training, this study would contain contemporariness by concretizing the scene from the eye of the present beyond simply following the theories. From a lot of preceding studies, the present studies of actor training are predominantly in an experimentation form through one methodology. However, this study would check the effectiveness of grafting more than one training and reveal the specific methods for complementary parts between methodologies. In other words, in the researcher’s opinion on actor training, a contemporary methodology is needed for the birth of a new actor. The contemporary methodology here refers to the process in which actors and acting training find their methodologies and create training methods and routines in an active and creative collaborative relationship, instead of something epoch-making and special coming from another dimension. This means that it is necessary to conduct studies of multifaceted acting and physical training methods based on the self-awareness about the body with which the actor himself appears on the stage while there have been sufficient discussions on the methodologies for the actor. The form of training of acting should, most of all, be diverse and focus on the ‘process.’ If it is possible to graft various methods with a more comprehensive form of training, like an actor finds and wears his clothes himself, it would be possible to lead to a new paradigm by transforming and combining each methodology. In this sense, this study would ask for the actor’s active and spontaneous attitudes, proposing various methods for physical training of actors and help as an effective solution for the need for a flexible body and the extension of its scope.
