This paper attempts to place the study of Korean peninsula filmmakers in Shanghai during the period of Japanese imperialist occupation in the context of a multidisciplinary intersection of history, culture and communication studies, and to explore the film practice activities of Korean filmmakers in Shanghai in a special historical context within a framework consisting of film history, film culture, film criticism and film theory.
Firstly, this study focuses on the Korean peninsula filmmakers who in Shanghai between 1926 and 1937. Taking the development of film art in China and the Korean peninsula in the early days and the contact space created by the cultural exchanges between the two places as a premise, the study examines the reasons for the departure of Korean filmmakers from the Korean peninsula, taking into account the social environment, the development of film, and the film practice of Korean filmmakers in the Korean peninsula before they left for Shanghai during the Japanese imperialist occupation.Summarising the international developments of the time, the social context of Shanghai's existence as a special social and cultural space, and the specific developments in Shanghai's film culture, industry and policies around the 1930s, the deeper reasons why Korean peninsula filmmakers chose to converge in Shanghai, China.
Secondly, the process of Korean peninsula filmmakers' film practice is divided into three different stages: initial entry, integration and maturation based on the different turns of their creative styles. In the context of the film ecology of Shanghai, the film practice of Korean peninsula filmmakers exiled to Shanghai, whose unique cultural and identity attributes constantly collided and merged with the film market and film industry of the time, continues to adapt their own creative styles and film genres in a heterogeneous space. The aim is to construct a rich, three-dimensional landscape of the film practices of Korean filmmakers in Shanghai during the Japanese imperialist occupation from multiple perspectives and sides.
Thirdly, the unique identity of the exile group led the Korean filmmakers to try to incorporate their spiritual motherland, their country of residence, and their national imagination of wandering and dislocation into their own cinematic creations, using the special urban space of Shanghai as a backdrop to express the wanderers' thoughts about their homeland, their uneasiness about their wandering identity, and their confusion about their diverse identities under the changing times. Shanghai, then known as the 'Hollywood of the East', became a unique presence in a special context. As a kind of spatial interaction, Shanghai of the city and Shanghai of cinema are images superimposed on the filmmakers and the times, a cultural imagination in which the creators and the audience participate, and a unique imagery to express political, economic and cultural demands in the film space constructed by the Korean filmmakers.
Fourthly, the artistic achievements and values of Korean filmmakers who were in Shanghai during the Japanese imperialist occupation as well as the complex reasons for their diversion in Shanghai and their multiple destinations are examined, and the intrinsic correlation between the film practice of Korean filmmakers represented by Jeon Chang-geun who returned to the Korean peninsula after 1937 and early Shanghai film production is explored. The aim is to examine the historical evidence of Korean filmmakers who broke the geographical boundaries and actively integrated into the special cultural space of Shanghai during the Japanese imperialist occupation and achieved remarkable achievements in film production, and to provide historical references and lessons for the current film exchanges between China and South Korea.
