The Characteristics and Spatial Design of the Public Library’s Space Program Based on the Concept of 'Third Place'원문보기

Public libraries have changed as social roles and functions continue to change with the changes of the times. In particular, in modern times, the social roles and functions of public libraries require new social roles and functions as a space for the hub of the community, that have been expanded to include the sharing of data (information) and exchange and communication among users, beyond basic functions such as the collection and preservation of existing data (information). This may be because public libraries are particularly involved in the daily lives of citizens (users) among various "public spaces." Ray Oldenburg established through his book "The Great Good Place" that the concept of "third place" is a "space where nature meets the joy of human desire to interact as a venue for exchange in the local community." Based on this conceptual content, the program and spatial orientation of the modern public library, which is enhancing its role and function as a hub for the local community, can be said to be no different from Ray Oldenburg's concept of "third place." In addition, this conceptual approach is already being discussed by experts in a number of libraries. In this paper, how should the concept as “third place” that the modern public library should pursue in terms of an approach to previous discussions in the field of spatial design, be combined with the spatial programs of the library? And how should that specific spatialisation be implemented? The purpose of the above project is to propose the spatial design of the public library where the concept of “third place" is applied based on the background of the previous research. The specific method of research is as follows. 1) A new direction was considered by reviewing reports related to the policies of libraries at home and abroad in order to review the social roles and functions required for modern public libraries. 2) The concept of Ray Oldenburg's "third place" was organized and analyzed and the conditions of the "third place": novelty, life balance, rejuvenating agent, and the eight characteristics presented by a group of friends and Ray Oldenberg were compared with the direction of the public library, which led to the characteristics of the four spatial programs pursued by the library as a "third place": ① community consciousness, ② social satisfaction, ③ emotional stability, and ④ autonomous activities. 3) 5 cases of spatial design in domestic and foreign libraries, where advanced activities are being developed, were analyzed to explore the concept of "third place," characteristics of spatial programs, and methods of spatial design in public libraries. 4) Based on the results of the previous theoretical review and case analysis, a plan for the spatial design of the G Library in Guri was proposed, which was applied with the concept of "third place." In this paper, the process and method of the research above, and the proposal of spatial design, and the proposal of spatial design based on the characteristics of the following four spaces was planned and proposed. ①Space design for fostering community consciousness : It allows residents in the region to feel a sense of belonging, and the identity of the reading room or region of the local data is expressed. ②Space design for enhancing social satisfaction : It is a space where new encounters of various people in the region are made, and the user's needs are met. ③Space design to improve emotional stability : Various users' actions are supported so that the space can be easily recognized. This creates a comfortable and stable space. ④Space design to support autonomous activities : Creative activities are carried out by users using the programs of public libraries themselves.
