The objective of this study was to examine Korean male idol group BTS’ representation of masculinity, focusing on their image and identity. Currently, the existence of an idol has more meaning than an icon which is a representing popular culture. An idol is a sociocultural phenomenon and discourse itself. The image of an idol is an important channel to represent the value of the group and exists as a text in which social desires and ideologies are intertwined in multiple layers. In recent days, that an idol group named BTS set an unusual record in the global pop culture market, and reborn as a new cultural icon presents the possibility to interpret their existence in various ways. However, from a gender perspective, that the group is presented as a model for “alternative masculinity” seems to form a sense of heterogeneity, because they were at the center of the “controversy over misogyny” in the past, and furthermore, have always pursued hip-hop, a relatively male-centered music genre and culture, as the basis of the group. Therefore, as looking at the course of BTS’ image establishment, this study focused on the fact that they have been positively evaluated on the issue of representation of masculinity when social background and group-level history are combined. By doing so, this study tried to work out the limitation and novel possibility of the discussion that BTS presents a new gender perspective. As a result, BTS’ image could be classified into two in general: (1) the form of ‘change and growth’ and (2) the form of ‘maintenance and expansion’. Although they were allocated in the position of peripheral figures as ‘idols’ and ‘Asians’ in the context of a male-centered hip-hop culture and a white-centered racism, their pursuit of a contrary stream from the perspective of representation of masculinity could make them obtain a misogynous image and an alternative male image. Regarding the former, as BTS followed traditional hip-hop grammar in order to overcome the identity of male idols that representing femininity, they caused controversy over misogyny. However, regarding the latter, as BTS’ process of expanding hybrid masculinity intersected with the racial stratum, they have been regarded as alternative masculinity in the end. At this time, they actively utilized the code of authenticity, and thus filled the blank made by heterogeneous identity with ‘youth’, a de-gender-based universal image. This endeavor, together with their industrial success, functioned as a mechanism to consolidate their position as a main agent of youth and a new social leader. In this vein, because BTS’ image is based on the hybrid masculinity that has been firmly established as a seemingly specialized image of K-POP male idols, namely a hybrid masculinity that mixes femininity and masculinity appropriately, its intersection with the racial stratum inevitably results in the limit of making the meaning of alternative masculinity more conspicuous. In addition, because the tendency of BTS’ image to be over-represented as an exemplary success icon and a de-gender main agent of youth is in line with male idol’s placement as a transcendental signifier of current society, it seems to be necessary to discuss it continuously. However, when considering the flow that the image, which has been regarded as an alternative masculinity, gradually gains dominance in accordance with its visualization from the perspective of main stream culture and industry, beyond being considered as a unique example of success of a group, it can be a start point of another discussion. So the author wants to leave the gate of another discussion open. In addition, BTS’ representation of masculinity seems to have another alternative meaning in that it could clearly detect a process of change from the perspective of representation of masculinity and secure a novel cultural identity by exclusively possessing the genre and culture of hip-hop continuously and without removing the hybrid masculinity as an idol.
