Manufacturing companies have invested a significant amount of time and resources to implement the PLM(Product Lifecycle Management) system for the past two decades. However, some companies suffer from low usage of the PLM system. With low usage, it is hard to realize the benefits from the PLM system. Another issue is that many companies have difficulties in demonstrating financial benefits from the PLM system in an objective and quantitative terms, although there are many reports and papers showing qualitative benefits. This study attempts to find out ways to enhance the utilization of the PLM system and to demonstrate financial benefits from the PLM system. The first part of this study is to figure out how to increase the usage of the PLM system in companies that have already implemented the system. Various ideas for enhancement were collected from the literature review and summarized to build a questionnaire asking the importance of each idea. Through a survey from participants to a PLM System Conference, responses were collected from a sample of 186 users who had the previous experience in using at least one PLM system. In order to figure out the differences in the importance among user groups, the F-test with the Scheffe test as a post-hoc analysis was used in case of equal variances and the Welch test with the Dunnet T3 test was used in case of unequal variances. 25 improvement ideas were sorted out according to their importance assessed by the PLM system users. The top five ideas are increase in data consistency, error minimization, fast system response time, enhancing user recognition, and business process improvement. Different user groups show significant differences in 9 items. Typically the support group put higher importance than the general user group in data consistency, fast system response time, enhancing user recognition, business process improvement, dedicated team for data consistency, continuous support from management, hardware performance upgrade, output linkage to other systems, and shortening problem solving duration. The largest company group attaches significantly higher weights than the smallest company group to data consistency, error minimization, fast system response time, business process improvement, dedicated team for data consistency, security with proper access management, output linkage to other systems, and better user interface. The second part of this study is to analyze the quantitative effect of the PLM system empirically. One of major qualitative benefits from the PLM system is the product quality improvement. In order to measure the product quality improvement quantitatively, the ratio of quality assurance costs to sales was chosen. Financial reports were collected from public sources such as KISVALUE and two groups of companies were selected. One group included companies with a PLM system and the other without a PLM system. The analysis found that companies with a PLM system showed a significant difference in the ratio of quality assurance costs to sales for the period of 4 years or more, before and after the implementation. However, another analysis on companies without any PLM system showed no difference in the ratio between the first 5 years and the last 5 years for the past ten years. These results demonstrate that the effect of the PLM system is not realized in a short term, but accumulates slowly and appears in the mid-to-long-term of 4 or more years.
