The aging population is rising consistently and it causes a variety of side effects. Particularly, skeletal muscle loss with aging induces the loss of independence, disability, mortality, and quality of life. Exercise training is known to be an efficient, non-pharmacological way to maintain health and reduce all-cause mortality. Mitochondrial function is suggested to be one of the most important indices to evaluate both aging and exercise effects. Despite this aspect, the effect of aging and exercise training on mitochondrial function has not been well understood. Additionally, it is unclear whether muscle fiber-type has an effect on mitochondrial function related to aging and exercise training. This study aims to investigate the influence of 8 weeks of regular endurance exercise training on age-associated mitochondrial dysfunction in two different types of skeletal muscle. As a result, age-associated decreases in CS and mitochondrial complex activities were observed, while these age-associated decreases were reversed by exercise training in both type Ⅰ and Ⅱ skeletal muscle. Furthermore, the muscle fiber-type differences were detected in the coenzyme Q10 activities of mitochondrial complex. Conclusionally, this study suggests that regular endurance exercise training improves the age-associated decline of enzyme activities of the TCA cycle and mitochondrial electron transport chain as well as muscle fiber-type differences influence on the enzyme activities mitochondrial function.
