The purpose of this study is to reduce the damages caused by fire in indoor gymnasium and, thus, to minimize the casualty therefrom, by analyzing cases with different opening of the door, evacuation time, toxic gas release and visible distance. Firstly, the changes in temperature, visible distance, burning rate and heating values in the fire cases in an indoor gymnasium with large number of users were studied. The study revealed that, in order to lower the temperature in the room with fire, there is an necessity to extend the existing regulations on the fire proofing of furniture made of fabric or synthetic resins to cover not only the karaokes and bars, but also the cultural and sports facilities including the indoor gyms. Secondly, the change in concentration of CO, CO2 and O2 gases released from the fire and the visible distance in case of fire in an indoor gymnasium were analyzed. The purpose of the analysis was to minimize the damages on the workers, who are familiar with the internal structure of the building but responsible for fire extinguishment, alert announcement and evacuation of the people, from the toxic gas and reduction of visible distances. In both cases with and without sprinkler that sprays water through open head, the concentration of O2 and visible distance decreased rapidly, whereas the concentration of CO and CO2 increased. Thirdly, the operation start time was analyzed when a fire occurs in an indoor gymnasium where sprinklers are installed as standard response type, special response type, and quick response type. In the case of the standard response type sprinkler, #7 of the head opened at 48 seconds and #1 of the head opened at 172 seconds. In the case of the special response type sprinkler, #7 of the head opened at 14 seconds and #9 of the head opened at 94 seconds. In the case of the quick response type sprinkler, #7 of the head opened at 9 seconds and #9 of the head opened at 74 seconds. Therefore, it’s necessary to install the quick response type sprinkler to extinguish the fire quickly and prevent the fire from spreading. Fourth, using an evacuation simulation for a fire case in an indoor gymnasium, the evacuation times for simultaneous and sequential evacuation by age groups were compared. For sequential evacuation, the evacuators were grouped into children, elderly and adults, in that order. As a result, the adult group took the shortest time to evacuate with evacuation time of 313.6 seconds and 325.1 seconds with terms of 30 seconds and 20 seconds between the groups, respectively. The result implies that keeping 30 seconds terms between the groups in sequential evacuation is more effective as the evacuation time for the adult group was 11.5 seconds shorter than with 20 seconds terms. Lastly, the total evacuation time with and without automatic switchgear on doors was investigated. In case of evacuating from the seats on the first floor of a stadium out through the door on the ground floor, the RSET was 337 seconds with 1,500mm wide door and 445 seconds with 750mm wide door, with attribute to the automatic doors and rapid responses of the staff members. The result shows that the evacuation time is reduced by 108 seconds for a door with width of 1,500mm than of 750mm. The purpose of this study was to minimize the damages in fire case in an indoor gymnasium, on which the existing studies are rare to find, by investigating the evacuation time and the characteristics of heat and smoke from the fire using simulations.
