The purpose of this study is to identify the museum orientation elements that must be met to form a meaningful museum experience for visitors, analyze orientation cases conducted at home and abroad, and suggest direction to product and utilize museum orientation. Despite efforts to attract visitors to the museum as a venue of popular culture and education, many people are often reluctant to visit the museum due to negative image of the museum is caused by psychological anxiety in an unfamiliar museum environment or by memories of being forced to visit without motive or expectation. This was investigated based on Falk & Dierking's Contextual Model of Learning(2008), Csikszentmihalyi & Hermanson's research(1995) on intrinsic learning motivation in museums, and Madden's research(1992) on museum learning. Putting the above studies together, first of all, background knowledge and experience should be activated, appropriate motivation for viewing should be formed, and an understanding of the museum itself and space should be made. Visitors should feel psychologically comfortable and safe, and should not be physically exhausted or tired. In addition, it was found that the learning effect could be strengthened through engaging in manipulation activities and socio-cultural exchanges at the museum. In order to satisfy the above conditions through museum orientation, based on the Belcher(2006)’s and Bitgood(1995)’s research about museum orientation, orientation elements corresponding to each aspect were derived by dividing them into intellectual/conceptual, psychological, physical, and practical orientation. In intellectual/conceptual orientation, there are 'understanding the museum', 'exhibition topics and contents', 'terms and concepts', 'background knowledge and prior experience' and 'museum etiquette' In psychological orientation, there are 'expectation and curiosity', 'comfortable atmosphere', 'relationship formation'. Physical orientation elements are 'location and path', ‘space search’, 'movement path in museum'. In practical orientation, there are 'participation and choice', and 'application and connection' In domestic and foreign museum orientation cases, the contents and forms of the above orientation elements were analyzed, and the results of the analysis were as follows. First, in student orientation, there is psychological orientation that stimulates students' expectations and curiosity for visits. Second, In teacher orientation, practical orientation is found, such as information on educational programs, activity sites, and experiences related to museums. Third, each museum’s characteristic and mission are also revealed in the orientation cases. Through museum orientation elements and orientation cases at the actual museum site, I would like to propose the following in terms of production and utilization of orientation materials. First, when producing orientation program or data, four aspects of the museum orientation are appropriately considered. Second, when making an museum orientation program, the age, level, and interest of the target visitors should be considered in the content composition and format, and in particular, student group orientation materials can induce their motivation and curiosity. Third, it is necessary to develop orientation materials in a form that allows visitors to interact. Fourth, teachers can actively utilize orientation materials to increase students' motivation for viewing before visiting the museum for field trips. In this way, through orientation, the museum will be able to approach a comfortable and familiar space to the public and to elicit an active and enthusiastic attitude of visitors. It is expected that various types of orientation materials will be developed to serve as a function for visitors' positive and meaningful experience, not just as a function of museum guidance and promotion.
