Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are promising systems with low cost, high theoretical energy density (2600 Wh/kg), and use of eco-friendly materials, i.e., sulfur. However, LSBs are faced with challenges such as volume expansion of the sulfur species, dissolution of polysulfide during charging and discharging, low electrical conductivity of the final products (S8 and Li2S), and use of lithium metal. Therefore, this study mitigated the problems of LSBs in stages by developing a silicon-based anode, porous carbon as a sulfur support, and a lithium sulfide (Li2S) cathode. Especially, we develop a novel method using two-dimensional siloxene (2DSi) chemically bound to polyimide (PI) binder. First, 2DSi with a chemical formula of Si6H3(OH)3 possesses 2D corrugated Si (111) planes, confining the volume expansion to the x-y plane parallel to current collector. Second, with the abundant vertically aligned surface hydroxyl functional groups, 2DSi particles can be tightly bound to conductive carbon additive and current collector via imidization with polyamic acid, which alleviates the volume expansion and hides the surface of Si planes from electrolytes. Such a chemical linkage can be formed during electrode preparation conducted at temperatures as high as 350°C. This further strengthens the electrical contacts among 2DSi particles, conductive carbon additives, and current collector. A multi-functional, porous carbon support is proposed for LSBs under high-loading sulfur conditions. The carbonaceous material is synthesized from an organic crystal complex and carbon precursor. In particular, the organic crystal complex is produced by mixing a melamine and cyanuric acid solution, and serves as a reactive template to form pores and introduce heteroatom (nitrogen). The synthesized carbon mainly has mesopores, proving sufficient space to support high sulufr loading of 6.0 mg/cm2 or more, and contains nitrogen having an affinity for litium-polysulfide (LiPS) to effectively mitigate LiPS dissolution. Finally, Li2S cathode is suggested for a lithium metal-free batteries. The Li2S cathode is provided through carbothermal reduction which is completed only by simple heating from mixed powder of synthesized carbon and commercial lithium sulfate (Li2SO4). Particularly, as a strategy for high energy density, a method for manufacturing a free-standing electrode that does not require a binder and conductive carbon additive is also proposed.
