더빙 앱을 활용한 학습이 초등학교 4학년 영어 학습자의 인지적, 정의적 영역에 미치는 영향 An Analysis of Video Dubbing Effects on Cognitive and Affective Areas of 4th Grade Elementary English Learners원문보기

This study was conducted on 20 English learners in the 4th grade of elementary school to find out how learning by video dubbing affects the elements in English speaking (pronunciation, stress, rhythm, intonation) and affective areas (interest, motivation, anxiety, confidence). An application called "2DUB" was used as a tool for dubbing. Five videos were selected after considering the fourth-grade curriculum and student interests. Each dubbing section was composed of four stages given over a two week period. The data was analyzed quantitatively as well as qualitatively. In order to analyze the changes in the elements in English speaking, both native and Korean English teachers evaluated the pronunciation, stress, rhythm, and intonation before, during, and after the video dubbing activity. Students were divided into three groups according to their speaking level. A survey assessing the affective changes was also conducted twice. In order to supplement the quantitative analysis results, interview data conducted with students and the native English teacher were collected and analyzed. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, learning by video dubbing had a positive effect on the improvement of pronunciation and suprasegmental phonemes required for the speaking ability of fourth-grade elementary school learners. In the analysis of all students, significant improvements were found in all areas of pronunciation, stress, rhythm, and intonation. In particular, between the pre- and post- evaluation, there were positive changes in pronunciation, stress, and rhythm, while in the middle group, there was a significant improvement in all factors. Therefore, learning by video dubbing could be a more effective learning method for students of low to intermediate ability than for those of greater ability. In addition, it had a positive effect on both male and female students in improving pronunciation and rhythm. Especially, it had a positive effect on the male students’ learning of intonation and the female students’ learning of stress. Second, learning by video dubbing had a positive effect on interest and anxiety among the affective areas. It aroused students' interest in that they can put their voices on videos, learn with familiar videos, and share and compare dubbed videos with friends. Male students showed a significant reduction in anxiety which means learning by video dubbing can not only be an effective way to induce interest in learning English, but can also be usefully used to lower male students' anxiety toward learning English. Based on these conclusions, three implications can be suggested. First, learning activities using video dubbing apps can be a useful learning method that can improve speaking skills by effectively learning English pronunciation, stress, rhythm, and intonation. Second, learning activities using video dubbing apps can be an effective learning method, especially for students of low to intermediate English ability to improve the elements required for English speaking. Third, learning activities using video dubbing apps can be a learning method that helps lower English anxiety while increasing the learning interest of students who have low interest in English. Through the conclusions of the current study, the following suggestions are made. First, it is necessary to investigate the effect of learning by video dubbing on other language functional areas of elementary school students. Second, it is necessary to analyze the effect of learning by video dubbing on the affective domain of elementary school students through in-depth research. Third, it is necessary to specify a way to more effectively utilize video dubbing through distance learning and self-directed learning. Fourth, there is a need to conduct research to verify the effectiveness of vocabulary learning while applying video dubbing.
