Correlation of Depression with Education and Asset level in the Korean Elderly: Comparison between Young-old and Old-old원문보기

Background: A rapidly aging world is now grappling with a rise in depression as a mental health problem of the elderly. While many studies have analyzed the correlation between socioeconomic characteristics and depression among the elderly, few have demonstrated how one’s assets or interaction of education and asset levels affect their depression. Also, the studies adjusted various socio-demographic, social support, and health behavior characteristics using nationwide data are limited. Moreover, since the age structure of the Korean elderly is changing quickly and the characteristics of depression are different between young-old (65-74) and old-old (75 and above) groups, this study separately analyzed two age groups. Thus, the study aims to provide fundamental data on the prevention and management of depression among young-old and old-old groups in Korea through exploring the main and interaction effect of education and asset levels on depression. Method: The study obtained data from the 2020 National Survey of the Elderly conducted through face-to-face interview of the Korean elderly aged ≥65 years to analyze the correlation of depression with education and asset levels on young-old and old-old individuals. The study population comprised 5,894 young-old and 3,875 old-old. The SAS version 9.4 was used to perform Rao-Scott Chi-square, Independent ttest, and survey logistic regression. Multivariable analysis model 1 included education and asset levels, model 2 added socio-demographic and social support characteristics, and model 3 additionally adjusted health behavior characteristics. Further, in young-old group, model 4 contained the interaction term of education and asset levels. Result: Of the 5,894 young-old and 3,875 old-old individuals, 9.1% of young-old and 17.2% of old-old displayed signs of depression. In model 4, which adjusted socio-demographic, social support, and health behavior characteristics in young-old, people with lower education level ( school) compared with higher education level (≥high school) have 1.78 times (95%CI=1.25-2.53) odds of depression. People with the lowest level of assets have 1.89 times higher (95%CI=1.18-3.05) odds of depression than those with medium level of assets. And interaction effect of education and asset levels on depression was not statistically significant. However, in model 3, which adjusted socio-demographic, social support, health behavior characteristics in old-old, education and asset levels were not statistically associated with depression. Conclusion: The study showed that lower education level ( and the lowest asset level are associated with depression in Korean young-old individuals. Furthermore, it showed that education levels impact depression regardless of asset levels and vice versa. In youngold group, it is necessary to develop depression monitoring and management programs for high-risk groups of depression by assessing education and asset levels. In addition, providing educational and economic support to improve health-related knowledge and assets as well as emotional support after the retirement should be considered. In old-old group, customized support focusing on other socio-demographic, social support, and health behavior characteristics associated with depression is needed. These findings contribute to the health policy development for depression in consideration of the characteristics of young-old and old-old seniors, so it can improve the health and quality of life of the elderly and reduce direct and indirect social costs.
