Dementia is a degenerative disease that has no arousal disorder and has at least one of memory, speech, spacetime, and executive dysfunction, and has a standard that it should interfere with social life or professional activities. Dementia is generally accompanied by communication disorders, and significant changes can be expected when augmentative and alternative communication (hereinafter referred to as AAC) used by people with complex communication needs is applied to dementia patients. In order for AAC to establish itself as a successful communication intervention method for dementia patients, the recognition and demand of service demanders play an important role, but no research has been conducted in Korea so far. Therefore, through this study, we tried to investigate awareness, use status, and support needs related to AAC for guardians of dementia patients. The subjects of the study were recruited online for 15 days from October 12, 2021 to October 26, 2021. A total of 231 responses were received, of which a total of 227 were analyzed, excluding 4 cases where there were inappropriate respons es to the selection of subjects. As a result of the study, 50.7% (115 out of 227) of the total 227 caregivers said that patients had experience using AAC tools, indicating that the AAC use rate of dementia patients was not significantly low. In addition, 43.6% (99) of carers responded that AAC was most needed in the 'moderate'. Respondents responded that as a support measure for the activation of AAC, 51.5% (117) of carers needed education on what role they should play as communication facilitators. In addition, 102 people (44.9%) cited daily conversation with their families in a questionnaire asking about the most needed situation for AAC. This is related to the desire to improve the quality of communication life through smooth communication with family i n daily life due to the nature of dementia that spends a lot of time with family. Through this study, it was possible to find objective figures that the AAC usage rate of dementia patients was not low. In order to connect the usage rate of AAC to high satisfaction, it can be said that education that reflects various needs of guardians and patients is necessary, away from the provision of simple AAC tools. In addition, in order for language rehabilitation workers to play a role as a language rehabilitation service provider for dementia patients, it is necessary to inform language rehabilitation workers of the necessity of AAC intervention and provide education to train AAC professionals.
