This study was conducted to determine the effect of rap-based music therapy on vocational rehabilitation on adults with intellectual disabilities in the scope of self-expression and empathy. The subjects of the study are 4 adults with intellectual disabilities who have completed courses in employment training in a training center for the men with mental disabilities located in province ‘S’. The program was carried out from February 25th 2022 to May 6th 2022 in groups over a total of 12 sessions, 1-2 sessions per week, 90 minutes per session. Rap-based music therapy is composed of 3 stages - ‘Recognition of Self-Emotional', 'Sharing Emotions with Others', and 'Joint Performance Process with Integrated Topics' through music to enhance self-expression and empathy. In order to evaluate the enhancement in self-expression and empathy, subjects’quantified performance scores were evaluated prior to and following the research program. The improvement in self-expression and empathy were also quantitatively analyzed step-by-step during the program through the participants' responses and lyrics. As a result, all participants’scores showed significant enhancement in self-expression and empathy. Furthermore, participants showed positive changes in sub-elements of self-expression and empathy. Such elements include verbal, nonverbal, and phonetic self-expression and cognitive, emotional and behavioral empathy. In turn, this framework can be used as a supportive reference to utilizing rap-based therapy for enhancement in self-expression and empathy for men with disabilities in need of vocational rehabilitation.
