Atomic force microscopy (AFM) enables direct visualisation of surface topography at the nanoscale. However, post-processing is generally required to obtain accurate, precise, and reliable AFM images owing to the presence of image artefacts. In this study, we proposed image denoising deep learning models for AFM images containing different types of noise. We preprocessed the datasets with opinions of expert and added four types of synthetic noise using Gwyddion, AFM data visualisation and analysis software. We compared and analysed four models, namely MPRNet, HINet, Uformer, and Restormer. Specifically, the denoising performance and inference time of these algorithms on AFM images were compared. Moreover, Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio(PSNR) and Structural Similarity Index Map(SSIM) were used to evaluate the denoising performance. The results demonstrate that Restormer is the most effective model for denoising AFM images, with the highest PSNR and SSIM. However, considering the required computational resources and denoising performance, HINet is the most efficient model, with the second-highest performance and the lowest inference time. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate that image denoising models can generate clear, accurate, and reliable AFM images from degraded images and can provide an effective alternative to post-processing on AFM images, which can currently be performed only by domain experts.
