Behavioral activation aims to increase participation in pleasurable, productive, or rewarding behaviors. In this study, therapeutic gardening was set as an activity that gives pleasure and vitality. Therapeutic gardening is a plant-centered environment purposefully designed to promote interaction with nature and aims to heal and improve health through plant and garden activities. Recently, due to prolonged COVID-19, stress response, depression, frustration, and anxiety have socially increased, and interest in therapeutic gardening, which encompasses prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, has increased. However, there is a lack of research on verifying the effectiveness and mechanism of gardening programs for people who do not have a diagnosis of mental illness. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to study the effectiveness of gardening and explore the factors that mediate the effectiveness. A total of 52 participants who experienced mild to severe depression or anxiety and did not have any other neuropsychological disorders were enrolled in this study. The gardening program was conducted twice a week, with a total of 30 sessions, and each session took an average of 3 hours. Depression, anxiety, vitality, and quality of life were measured pre-post, and evaluation of depression, anxiety, and vitality was additionally conducted once every two weeks. It was predicted that the therapeutic gardening program would enhance the quality of life of participants and alleviate depression and anxiety. We hypothesized that vitality would mediate this process. In order to verify these hypotheses, a paired sample t-test for pre- and post-test was performed, and MEMORE macro was used for mediation analysis. Finally, repeated measure MANOVAs was conducted to see the trend of changes in depression, anxiety, and vitality. As a result, statistically significant results were derived from all mental variables, and it was found that vitality mediated the improvement of the quality of life, depression, and anxiety of Therapeutic gardening through mediated analysis. In addition, depression, anxiety, and vitality all showed significant changes by period. Through this, it can be speculated that Therapeutic gardening can act as a treatment for people experiencing mental difficulties, and it can be seen that Therapeutic gardening has achieved an improvement in the quality of life, depression and anxiety through vitalization.
