The Paris Agreement requires the world to put the best efforts to reduce CO2 emission due to the global warming problems. As a promising technology corresponding to this greenhouse gas treatment, the CO2 methanation process a.k.a power to gas (PtoG), which catalytically converts CO2 into methane, has been in the limelight. To develop an efficient catalytic process, it is necessary to design a low-cost and high-efficiency catalyst for high CO2 conversion and CH4 selectivity. In first study, we have developed Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts by the one-step melt-infiltration method where both aging and calcination are done in one pot. For enhancement of the catalytic activity and selectivity, sufficient Ni content (> 25wt %) and a high dispersion (< 10 nm) are simultaneously required. Thus, the aging conditions of the melt-infiltration methods, e.g. time and temperature, were optimized for the high dispersion with sufficient Ni content (15 – 50 wt %). The catalytic performance tests were carried out under atmospheric pressure, 275 to 400 ℃ and GHSV = 25000 h-1. And the various characteristic analyses (BET, XRD, H2-chemisorption, TPR, etc.) were performed to confirm the effects on the catalytic performance. As a result, based on the experiments and the characterization data, the 30 wt %-Ni catalyst (Ni particles size = 11 nm) showed the best CO2 conversion at 300 ℃ and 20 wt % one having the highest Ni dispersion (Ni particles size = 8.8 nm) showed the best intrinsic reaction rate and CH4 selectivity in the entire temperature range. In second paper, we studied that highly loaded Ni/Al2O3 catalysts (30 wt%) were prepared with alkali metal (Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) by the one-step melt-infiltration (OSMI) method. Through XRD (X-ray diffraction), ICP-OES (Inductively plasma-atomic emission spectrometry), N2 physisorption, H2-TPR (H2 temperature-programmed reduction), CO2-TPD (CO2 temperature-programmed desorption), and TEM (transmission electron microscope) analyses, Ni active sites were investigated and the effectiveness of each alkali metal (Ca, Mg, Sr, and Ba) were elucidated. The catalytic activity was investigated in temperatures of 275 to 400 ℃ and weight gas hourly velocity (WHSV) of 160,000 gcat-1h-1 under atmospheric pressure. Nickel and alkaline-earth metals were uniformly dispersed into the pore structure of alumina support. The average metallic Ni particle size of each catalyst was almost the same ( ~11 nm), and no severe Ni sintering occurred even if Ni loading was 30 wt%. Mg-promoted Ni/Al2O3 catalyst was unsuitable to the OSMI method because the reduction of the Ni active sites was not completely carried out at a reduction temperature of 400 ℃. The Ca-promoted Ni/Al2O3 catalyst appeared to best catalytic activity among other metal promoted- Ni/Al2O3 catalysts. Calcium enhances CO2 adsorption amount and reducibility of Ni active sites, and the optimum calcium loading was 5 wt%. However, over-loading of Ca (10 wt%) seems to be harmful to the catalytic activity of the Ni active sites. In third paper, the effective nickel-based catalysts used in CO2 methanation reaction should be satisfied with high loading (~40 wt%) and nano-scaled (~10 nm) nickel particles. However, the achievement of these two conditions in nickel catalyst at once is quite complicated due to the relationship of inverse proportionality. The surfactant-assisted melt-infiltration (S.A.M.I.) method could provide a breakthrough to this problem. The various solid surfactants (Span60, SDBS, and CTAB) were homogeneously mixed with nickel nitrate and mesoporous silica support (SBA-15) in the non-solvent condition during melt-infiltration synthesis. The addition of non-ionic surfactant (Span60) achieved both high loading (40 wt%) of nickel and nano-scaled size (11 nm). The incorporation of nickel nitrate on the surface of as-synthesized SBA-15 facilitated by Span60 seems to form the nano-scaled size of nickel particles and could induce a large number of interfaces between nickel particles and support. This interface may have oxygen vacancy that facilitates the adsorption-dissociation of carbon dioxide on the catalytic surface of the nickel-based catalyst. The Span60/40Ni/as-syn-SBA-15 catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity in the reaction condition of high space velocity (120,000 mL/gcat·h). The positive aspect of nano-scaled size for nickel-based catalyst was not only to improve catalytic performance but also one that could be effective to the type of intermediate species in reaction pathway, which were determined catalytic activity. Thus, it could be expected why there was a difference in reaction activity by the only size of nickel particles. The S.A.M.I method could also be possible that efficient catalyst will be easily commercialized because this method did not produce liquid waste. In fourth paper, the oxygen vacancies derived from the interfaces between the active site and additive/support strongly influence the catalytic activity at low temperatures. In addition, to achieve maximum catalytic activity at low temperature, high loading of active sites and additives should be evenly distributed on the surface of support. Herein, we propose the surfactant-assisted melt-infiltration method for catalyst synthesis that can make it possible to synthesize nano-sized nickel (~ 1 nm) and ceria particles (~ 5 nm) even with high loading (Nickel: 27 wt% and Ceria: 37 wt%) in mesoporous silica support (SBA-15). The nickel particle can simultaneously generate an interface with ceria (Ni-O-Ce) and silica support (Ni-O-Si), respectively. These dual interfaces have a critical role in the smooth activation and decomposition of carbon dioxide by maximizing oxygen vacancy, and can simplify for mechanism route in CO2 hydrogenation reaction to CH4. Furthermore, the hydrogenation step of intermediate can be quickly initiated by the facilitation of hydrogen decomposition on the surface of nano-sized nickel particles.
