The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of picture exchange communication system (PECS) intervention for students with autism spectrum disorder and the perceptions of special education teachers towards PECS. To achieve the purpose of this study, the research questions are as follow. First, how does the PECS intervention affect the requesting behaviors of a student with autism spectrum disorder? Second, how do special education teachers perceive the PECS? For the first research question, one student with autism spectrum disorder who attends an elementary school at S Special School in Jeollanam-do was selected as the participant. The student was diagnosed with severe autism spectrum disorder as he had difficulties in speech and language and he could not request something using conventional gestures or utterances. In consideration of these student communication characteristics, we applied up to four stages of PECS to guide requesting behaviors. The AB design of a single subject study was used to assess the changes in student behavior. For the study, baseline data were collected for 3 sessions, and after 18 sessions of the intervention program, maintenance data were collected for 3 sessions. The effect of PECS intervention on the requesting behavior of a student with autism spectrum disorder is as follows. First, after applying PECS to a student with autism spectrum disorder who did not have requesting skills increased the frequency of immediate requesting behaviors, and at the end of the intervention, the student acquired the action of voluntarily bringing a picture card to obtain the desired object without presenting a preferred object that would attract the student's attention. Second, as the student could easily, quickly and accurately obtain the object that he wanted, challenging behaviors were decreased noticeably. Third, it promoted the imitation and utterances of students' spoken language. As moving into the fourth stage of the intervention, spoken language imitation and utterances began to occur. The student looked at the shape of the teacher's mouth and voluntarily copied the first syllable, and after that, the student voluntarily said the first syllable of "Please" even if the teacher did not say it first. For the second research question, 103 special education teachers across the nation responded to the survey to examine their perception of the PECS. Detailed results were as follows. The reason why not many people applied the PECS to the field was because of ‘the educational environment in which one-on-one intervention was impossible.’ Nearly 90% of special education teachers responded that they knew and implemented the PECS step-by-step contents and compliance. However, when asking O, X quizzes to examine knowledge of the PECS, only 60% on average of special education teachers got the right answer. This suggested that special education teachers may not be able to properly understand and implement the intervention procedure. When asked if they were willing to use PECS, 93.1% of special education teachers said that they would. And the majority of them reported that the PECS was very effective to promote the occurrence of spoken language. To promote the use of PECS in the future, they reported that specific case study training was necessary. In this study, it was found that the PECS intervention increased voluntary requesting behavior in students with autism spectrum disorder, reduced challenging behaviors, and promoted spoken language imitation and utterances. In addition, by investigating the perceptions of special education teachers about the PECS, we investigated their support needs to apply PECS in the field. However, there were several limitations in the research design and sample collection. Therefore, in future studies, applying a research design that can strongly prove a functional relationship is necessary and a representative survey should be conducted to reflect the perceptions of all special education teachers expanding the survey sample.
