Defects in social communication and social interaction in children with autism spectrum disorder are representative characteristics that make it difficult to develop speech and communication skills. Emotional expression, an essential element of social interaction, is a social technology that can narrow the psychological distance from others and is important in interacting with others. As a result, intervention in emotional expression is essential for children with autism spectrum disorders who show marked defects in sociality because it acts as a factor that can enhance social interaction. Emotions have representative sounds and facial expressions, and vocabulary to express emotions is set. Unlike emotional vocabulary that can be expressed with static images, sound and facial expressions need to show sound and movement, so dynamic images are needed. Therefore, this study looked at how emotional expression and generalization of children with autism spectrum disorders are effective when presented by implementing and presenting emotional expression with augmented reality that combines virtual reality with the real environment. The subjects of the study were three school-age children with autism spectrum disorder, and they were diagnosed with severe autism spectrum disorder by a specialist. The research tool is an intervention program that implements four target emotional expressions: 'Joyful, Sad, Surprised, and Angry' as an augmented reality-based application. The research method used a medium-to-many baseline design between subjects, and a total of 30 interventions were conducted twice a week for each subject. The stimulation of the target emotional expression was presented using an augmented reality application, and the child's response was divided into 'vocalization, facial expression, and language expression'. The results of this study are as follows. First, the subjects gradually showed a high positive response rate step by step, and as a result of measuring pre-and post-scores by extracting items related to emotional expression from the SELSI and K M-B CDI tests, the score changed. As a result, it was confirmed that emotional expression intervention programs using augmented reality-based applications have a positive effect on improving emotional expression in children with school-age autism spectrum disorders. Second, it was confirmed that the four emotions used in the emotional expression intervention program using augmented reality-based applications could be generalized when all three study subjects presented as picture cards after the intervention was completed. As shown in the results of the above study, the emotional expression intervention program using augmented reality-based applications was found to be an effective intervention method by generalizing in improving emotional expression and presenting picture card stimuli in children with school-age autism spectrum disorders. Through this, it can be concluded that the advantage of augmented reality, which can represent the sound of emotions or the movement of facial expressions, has a positive effect on emotional expression. However, this study only aims at four emotional expressions: 'Joyful, Sad, Surprised, and Angry', so it is difficult to generalize them to other emotional expressions, and it is limited to say that it had a positive effect on children with autism spectrum disorder. In addition, children with severe autism spectrum disorders subject to study have severe individual differences in autism spectrum disorders, so there is a limit to applying the study effect to all children with autism disorders. In the follow-up study, it is hoped that various types of children with autism spectrum disorder can be examined, the effects on various emotional expressions other than target emotional expression, and the effects of augmented reality on social interaction of children with autism spectrum disorder.
