In the midst of rapid technological development and changes in the market environment, continuous innovation is a challenge facing companies. In particular, since large corporations judge that the existing business models that have been successful in the past do not guarantee further growth and that they cannot meet the rapidly changing market opportunities only through internal R&D activities, they are actively developing an open innovation strategy through collaboration with external entities. A number of global conglomerates are exploring innovative technologies and new business in various fields through CVC (Corporate Venture Capital) operation, and are discovering new growth engines for companies through equity investment in startups and mergers and acquisitions. According to a study by the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA, 2018), the proportion of CVC investment, which was about 15% of the total VC investment in 2011, grew rapidly to 40.3% in 2018. As of 2018, 77% of the Fortune 100 companies are investing in venture capital and 52% of companies are reported to have CVCs. In the academic field, CVC research on various topics such as CVC performance,
Strategic operation plan, and comparative study of characteristics of each type is in progress. In particular, there are many studies analyzing CVC operation as part of an open innovation strategy in terms of acquiring new technology, technology catch up, technology absorption capacity & efficiency, new technology transfer, and technological knowledge diversification. However, in the case of CVC research in Korea, most of the research based on US CVC information was conducted due to difficulties such as regulations on the establishment of CVC, the immaturity of the venture investment ecosystem, and difficulties in securing related data. In the case of domestic CVC studies, no clear classification criteria for CVC were established, so it was confirmed that there was a large difference between the criteria and categories for classifying CVC depending on the researcher. This has become an obstacle to follow-up research by researchers in the field of CVC. Therefore, this study reviewed the existing CVC definition and classification criteria from a theoretical and practical level, and discussed the use and characteristics of CVC in terms of open innovation strategies based on domestic and foreign prior studies by combining them with domestic CVC cases. Through this, I intend to provide directions and implications for successful CVC operation. As for the research method, 13 CVCs were selected through a preliminary survey, and individual in-depth interviews were conducted with the CVCs’ current and former examiners of the company. As a result of the in-depth interview, ‘diversity of portfolio scope’, ‘form of establishment of CVC’ and ‘composition of fund investors’ were identified as the main factors that create operational differences in domestic CVCs. And by applying the factor as a variable of the CVC type model, an extended CVC type model was developed centered on two variables: 'portfolio diversity' and 'independence of CVC from the parent company'. The significance of this study is that it provided insight into the optimal operating form and operating method to effectively use CVC as the parent company's open innovation strategy. In other words, through the new CVC type model, it is possible to diagnose the current status of Korean CVC managers, and to check what operational advantages and disadvantages the corresponding type has in achieving the parent company's strategic objectives. This is meaningful in that it can serve as a guide for CVC managers to make the most of the open innovation strategy.
