Microplastics threaten the soil ecosystem causing adverse effects on organisms such as mortality, growth inhibition, and physiological factors, etc. Herein, this study aimed to perform the soil ecological risk assessment (SERA) for microplastics based on the probabilistic approach. Especially, for reliable SERA, the environmental relevant data for plants is critical. Accordingly, we tried to produce the chronic toxicity value of microplastics on the crop plant Pisum sativum. To investigate the chronic effects of microplastics, P. sativum was exposed to microplastics with copper in soil for 60 days. In all exposure groups including microplastics-, copper-, and the combined-exposure group, the productivity was inhibited, and the inhibition level was more extreme in combined exposure group. These results suggest that microplastics would have effects on the subsequent generations and may in turn affect human health via the food chain. To assess the ecological risk of microplastics, predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) and predicted environmental concentration (PEC) was calculated. The PEC was derived through environmental exposure distribution (EED) based on concentrations of microplastics in soil that were suggested in previous studies. The PEC for agricultural area and industrial area was estimated as 667.752 and 102.797 mg/kg soil, respectively. To derive the PNEC value, the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) was estimated based on chronic toxicity data for previous studies. Hazardous concentration for 5th percentile of species (HC5) and HC50 in soil ecosystem was derived as 88.181 and 2656.527 mg/kg soil, respectively, and each figure was adopted as PNEC for agricultural and industrial sites. Meanwhile, the toxicity value for P. sativum calculated in this study was confirmed as the most sensitive value, contributing to the derivation of PNEC. As a result for the derivation of hazardous Quotient (HQ), the HQ for agricultural sites was estimated as 7.573, suggesting that ecological risk of microplastics is very high. On the other hand, the HQ for industrial sites was derived as 0.039, which means ecological risk in industrial site was low. However, in both land uses, the overlap of EED and SSD has been identified, indicating that measures are needed to reduce the ecological risk of microplastics to the soil ecosystem. To compare the effects of microplastics on soil biota, the SSDs depending on microplastics properties including size, shape, and polymer type were also calculated. As a result, the smaller, sphere, and polystyrene had the lowest HC values among each property. These results suggest that microplastics threaten the soil ecosystem, accordingly, the establishment of a countermeasure for protecting the soil ecosystem from microplastic pollution is needed. This study can provide the basic information for the establishment of a soil management strategy for microplastic pollution.
