Most of the plastics used in daily life are generated in the land environment, and most of them are discarded without being recycled or re-collected. The discarded plastic is decomposed and fragmented to produce microplastics of 5 mm or less and nanoplastics of 1 μm or less, and are introduced into soil, water quality, and air. To investigate the distribution of microplastic contamination in the soil, microplastics were collected from soils of residential areas, agricutural lands, roadsides, forests, and parks. And microplastics were analyzed from sediments in Gimpo, Chuncheon, Gapyeong, Chungju, Yeoju, Paldang, and Jamsil, which are major cities of the Han River. Adsorption experiments of microplastic particles to insecticides and fungicides and experiments to investigate the absorption and movement of nanoplastics into plants by cultivating lettuce with hydroponic culture were also performed. As a result of this study, microplastic contamination was confirmed in the soil from roadsides, residential areas, and agricultural areas with a lot of artificial activities, and microplastics were also detected in the case of sediments. Adsorption of pesticides to microplastics that may occur in agricultural land was affected by the octanol-water partition coefficient and solubility of pesticides, and showed different trends depending on the plastic material. Nanoplastics with a size of less than 1 μm can be absorbed by plant roots along with water and move to the above ground, but there is a difference in the cell wall and the movement inside the cell depending on the size. Microplastic contamination can have adverse effects on the human body due to the increase in risk through the food chain, but microplastics are difficult to block and remove because they are small in size and difficult to visually check. Therefore, research on appropriate pretreatment and analysis of microplastics in soil and more research on the absorption mechanism and behavioral characteristics of nanoplastics from soil to plants will be the foundation for suggesting management plans for microplastics.
