The purpose of this study was to confirm the effect of basic psychological needs of late middle-aged adults on successful aging mediated by depression, and to verify whether social support had a moderating effect in the process. A online survey for this study was conducted on late middle-aged adults aged 50∼64 using the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Frustration Scale(BPNSFS), Depression Scale(K-CES-D), Social Support Scale and Successful aging Scale. For data analysis, frequency analysis of demographic variables was performed using SPSS 21.0, correlation analysis was performed to examine the relationship between major variables, and the mediating effect of depression and the moderating effect of social support were verified using Hayes(2018) PROCESS macro. The results are as follows. First, the satisfaction of basic psychological needs in late middle-aged adults showed a significantly negative correlation with depression, and depression also showed a significantly negative correlation with successful aging. At this time, the satisfaction of basic psychological needs and successful aging demonstrated a positive correlation. It was confirmed that depression partially mediates the relationship between satisfaction of basic psychological needs and successful aging. Second, the direct effect of the frustration of basic psychological needs on depression was significantly positive, and the direct effect of depression on successful aging was significantly negative. At the same time, the frustration of basic psychological needs was independent risk factor of failure of successful aging. This shows that the frustration of basic psychological needs has a direct effect on successful aging and indirectly affects through depression. Third, while social support did not have a significant role between the satisfaction of psychological needs and depression, it showed moderating effect on depression when basic psychological needs were frustrated. Finally, the significance and limitations of the study were discussed based on the results of this study.
