An Empirical Analysis of the Dual Supporting Burden on the Preparation for Older Life: Focusing on the Multiple Mediation Effect of Family Conflict and Social Support원문보기

From 2020 on, in which the leading generation of baby boomers, namely those born in 1955, enter old age, the compressed aging where the economically active population decreases dramatically and the baby boomers enter into the aged demographic, will increase the burden for the society as a whole. Once this generation becomes senior citizens over 75 years old, the demand for social accommodation will increase explosively, and a great load is expected to occur regarding the social cost. However, public policies or research on low birth rates fail to support the structural shifts of the domestic(Korean) population, and the plummeting of birth rate exacerbates the aging of the society and the pressure for the provision of the economically active within it, bringing about serious consequences such as lack of labor forces and an increase in social costs.(Park Jinyeong, 2008; Seong Myeonggi, 2009) In particular, the baby boomers are of a generation of traditional family-oriented political policies and provision system due to the era they’ve weathered, taking responsibility for the supporting of their parents and the rearing up of their children, but forced to supply for their own declining years with the conception of obligatory provision for elders weakening.(Shin Uisu, 2006) The phenomenon of dual supporting burden occurs due to the rapid decline in the number of individuals in charge of family support due to nuclear and small families becoming the norm midst late industrialization, the deconstruction of family, and double income couples increasing; at the same time the aging of the population, and the late marriage or singlehood of adult children who are independent bodies, causes an increase on the demand for support. (Kim Yugyeong, 2018) For the baby boomers, the dual supporting burden for grown-up offspring and elderly parents in addition to providing for their own advanced years increase their economical load. Since they may be reduced to the status of elderly poor once the employing environment turns unstable, this dual burden can cause disputes within families. Amongst conflicts which are more pronounced due to a change in family structure, many are relational ones which occurs due to the difference in value and culture between generations, and functional ones which comes from lack of family endowment including supplication and nurturing. Meanwhile, the baby boomers being a generation which experiences radical aging at the turning point from middle age to old age, their elderly years will be altered depending on how they prepare accordingly. (Han et al., 2011). Yet the present baby boom generation are burdened threefold, having to provide for their parents, educate their kids, and prepare for their own old years with the marrying off of their children(Jeong et al., 2010), and these factors combined make hard the generation’s preparation for their senior years. In this aspect, it is implied that the baby boomers are found to be at the core of the family provision but due to a sense of heightened responsibility are burdened by the pressure to support, and thus an examining research on the matter was necessary. While discourse is ongoing regarding the problematic lack of preparation and the need for design on the aged years on the part of baby boomers, social solutions or researches are lacking to a degree; these are greatly needed since they are intimately related to the aging of the domestic population with which the baby boomer’s aging is related, Responding to these arguments, in an attempt to offer a direction on policy-wise interventions on the social level and on the baby boomer’s enhancing of life quality through a stable preparation, the present research examines the multi-mediated effects of the negative aspect, which are family disputes, and the positive aspect, the social support relationships, regarding the rate in which the support for parents and offspring affects preparation for a baby boomer’s own old years. Accordingly, the present research aims to contribute to aiding the group less prepared for old age due to the pressure to support their own, by revealing the multi-mediated effect between family disputes and the social support relation network, reflecting on the relationship between the baby boomers’ dual burden due to their providing for parents and children and their preparedness for elderly years. In addition, this research’s goal is to provide basic data for administrative and policy-wise efficiency from a practical stance, regarding aging not as an individual issue but a social problem, working to solve them and offering a direction in which the problems of low birth rate-aging society can be resolved. Thus, the research formed structural-theoretical discourses to identify the relationships between baby boomer generation traits, the dual supporting burden, family disputes, social support networks and old age preparation. First, for empirical investigation, 350 copies were distributed to baby boomers born between 1955 and 1974, who were providing for both their parents and children, among which 311 were utilized in the scrutiny. Second, in order to examine the multi-mediating effect, the Spss Process Macro model 4 suggested by Hayes(2008) was utilized, and Bootstrap Samples were used to examine the mediating effect and the statistical relevance. As a result of the research, first of all in the scrutiny of the relationship between the dual support burden and preparation for the advanced years among baby boomers, a relevant and direct relationship was found between the two in the multiple regression analysis in which family conflicts and social supporting networks were not applied. Also, the burden of provision for parents and for children, the sub-variables of the dual support burden, which is in turn an independent variable, also had consequences statistically in the relationship with preparation for the elderly years. Further, scrutinizing the influence of dual burden on old age preparation, both the support for parents and for the children, sub-variables of the dual burden, had statistically relevant results upon analysis. Second, upon examining the multi-mediating effect of family conflicts and social support networks in the relationship between dual supporting burdens and old age preparation, these parameters (family conflicts and social support networks) partly mediated the toll the double support burden had on old age preparation; when the pressure to support for parents and children affected the arrangements for senior years, a partial meditating effect between family conflict and the social supporting network was found. Third, examining the mediating effect of family disputes and social supporting networks on the dual support burden in baby boomers’ old age preparation, being ready for senior years was pointed out as important in making better the quality of aged life for baby boomers. As for proposals, first of all, in order to lessen the burden, the municipality’s enacting of policies, such as the job formation and social contribution policies by the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the welfare and manpower policies by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the “Lifelong Learning Policy” by the Ministry of Education, are needed. Also needed are structures in which efficient connection and cooperation are possible. Second, since in order to improve the process of old age preparation, and for baby boomers to take part in desired activities and continue on with them, a support institution is needed where activities reflecting their wants are developed and distributed. Necessary are an integrated expansion of support organizations for senior year preparation, construction of connected systems, and structural strengthening. Third, to work towards the expansion of social supporting relationships, efforts must be made to understand baby boomer traits; also needed are the offering of services where their economical and leisure activity aspects can co-exist. Fourth, in order to lessen the family disputes, policies to relieve family conflicts and reaffirm a family-friendly social conception are needed, as well as expansion of health support centers. Further, the re-examining of services in terms of quality to mitigate family conflicts offered in health support centers is needed.
