The subject of this study is to examine the career adaptation experiences of general high school students enrolled in vocational training courses through a qualitative research method. The purpose of this study is to request academic and social awareness of enrolled in vocational training courses and to draw implications for career counseling policies. The question of this study is what is the meaning and context of career adaptation experiences of enrolled in vocational training courses. In answer to this, the researcher proposes to give meaning of ‘the career narrative of a enrolled student who is floating as a outsider’. A phenomenological and qualitative research method was applied to better understand the career adaptation experiences of general high school students enrolled in vocational training courses. The data collection of this study was carried out for about 14 months from mid-March 2021 to mid-May 2022, and the study participants were 22 adults with experience of enrolled in vocational training courses and 5 people around them. Prior to this study, a pilot study was conducted, and research data were collected through two to three in-depth interviews per individual. The analysis results of this study are as follows. I would like to explain the rationale for which the above-mentioned argument was derived from two aspects based on the systematic data of individual interviews with the study participants. The phenomenological qualitative research method used in this study goes through a process of description, analysis, and interpretation based on data. Therefore, the themes extracted in this process are not unilinear and segmented, but have a layered structure in which they are constantly exchanged and each subject is organically integrated with each other. First, it is the discovery of the phenomenon of existence floating around people. It was revealed that the lives of students enrolled in vocational training courses were floating in the areas of time, space, name, curriculum, etc. Students enrolled in vocational training courses still live as unstable beings as they go through the process of setbacks, hesitate to try, perseverance, and ‘gagjadosaeng各自圖生(self-reliance)’ in the process of career adaptation. Their career decision-making process was frustrated by negative stigma and social prejudice against ‘vocational class’, and their career search process was insufficient due to scare career information, but they had the courage to try new things. Success experiences and new social relationships helped a lot in the career adaptation process, but the mechanism for controlling the desire to resign was also a helpful factor. Although they went through a career adaptation process of perseverance, social prejudice and lack of policy support for ‘enrolled in vocational training courses’ often remained as career barriers like ambush, throwing them on the path of ‘gagjadosaeng各自圖生’. Second, we found that the career narratives of students enrolled in vocational training courses are being created. Their career adaptation experience was a time when a career narrative of ‘hesitate’ was created, which was different from that of general high school, specialized high school, and meister high school students. Compared to general high school students, they participated career-related practical training and experienced a new way of learning with the joy of gaining knowledge. However, it left a disappointment that the professionalism of the students of specialized high schools or meister high schools was not guaranteed. The weekly curriculum for attending general high schools was conducted in an unfamiliar format, and it became a time to endure. Success and frustration coexisted in their career adaptation experiences, depending on the individual student's self-control and preparation level. They enjoyed the time of new learning through acquiring a certificate for employment or through practice, but behind the scenes there was a time of frustration due to conflicts in relationships and lack of sufficient support. This has become a narrative in which resignation and gaining coexist, and at the same time, it has become the career narrative of exceptional beings, tuning at a slow pace in front of impossible hopes or dreams. Based on the analysis results, future research directions and implications for vocational education policy establishment were discussed.
