Kahoot 애플리케이션을 활용한 게이미피케이션 적용과 초등학생 영어 어휘력 향상 연구 A Study of the Improvement of Elementary Students’ English Vocabulary Through Gamification Using Kahoot Application원문보기

Since 2020, the Korean Ministry of Education has required software education for the 5th and 6th grade elementary school students and middle school students. Today, various educational platforms using games are being developed for the interests of learners who have grown up with digital technology. This study aims to understand the effect of learners' English vocabulary learning by analyzing the impact of the Gamification-applied class using the application ‘Kahoot!’ on the English vocabulary learning of elementary school students and these learners' perceptions and attitudes about it. To this end, I conducted total 6 experiments for 4 weeks with the 40 students of the 5th grade students at an elementary school located in J-city, Jeollabuk-do. Prior to this experiment, I identified the homogeneity of the two groups through a preliminary vocabulary ability test, and 20 students of experimental groups (Gamification applied) and 20 students of controlled groups (Gamification not applied) participated in this experiment. For the same target vocabulary in the textbook, the experimental group learned using Kahoot!, one of the game-based learning platforms, and the controlled group learned based on the textbook. In order to prove the results of this experiment, I conducted a post English vocabulary ability test on each group, and in addition, the experimental group conducted an affective domain test and filled out a questionnaire for a post-recognition survey. The results of this study are as follows: First, the English vocabulary ability of the experimental group was significantly improved than that of the controlled group, and the difference was statistically significant. The English vocabulary ability was improved greatly in the upper, middle, and lower ranks of the experimental group than in the controlled group, in particular, the increase in grades in the lower ranks was very high, which had a positive effect on narrowing the vocabulary learning gap. Second, the level of the affective domain (vocabulary confidence, interest, necessity, and motivation to learn) of the experimental group was statistically significantly improved, and showed statistically significant differences in all of the upper, middle, and lower ranks. Third, learners have very positive perceptions and attitudes toward Gamification-applied English vocabulary class. Through this, this study shows that the Gamification-applied class using Kahoot! is an effective method for learners to learn English vocabulary. In this study, I conducted only 6 English vocabulary classes using Gamification due to the limitation of curriculum time. If the class using the elements of Gamification for a long term, learners will be able to learn English words more interestingly. As the grade goes up, there are differences in the level of private education, learning spontaneity, and vocabulary knowledge among students, and accordingly, the gap in learning level between students increases, so more and more students give up learning English. In order to improve English communicative abilities, which are essential for living in a knowledge-based society, I hope that various Gamification-applied classes will be actively conducted so that learners can continue learning English with great interest.
