This study examines the way to activate child-initiated physical play using unstructured play materials, and identifies the changes in the children and a teacher who particiated in the process. The purpose of this study is to suggest a direction for activating child-initiated physical play in the early childhood education field.
The followings are the research questions to reach this end.
1. How is the process of action research to activate child-initiated physical play using unstructured play materials? 2. What are the changes in the children and a teacher who participated in action research to activate child-initiated physical play using unstructured play materials?
This study has researched at ‘Mujigae’ class, a class for 5-year-olds at Nuri Kindergarten in a city, Gyeonggi-do; the study period was from April 25, 2022, to July 22, 2022. The study participants were 21 children from the ‘Mujigae’ class and their charged teacher. The research was conducted in the following order: recognizing of the problems of current children’s physical plays and finding solutions to derive action plans; 1st implementation; 1st implementation evaluation; contemplation for 2nd plan; 2nd implementation; 1st and 2nd implementation evaluation. The data were collected and analyzed from the participants’ observations, the interviews with the children, photos and videos of the play, and the teacher’s self-reflective notes. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the following shows the process for activation of child-initiated physical play using unstructured play materials. First of all, the researcher recognized the problem that children cannot use the play materials freely by themselves, then the first implementation was conducted to resolve this problem. In the first implementation, the researcher reorganized the adult-centered play environment to a child-centered environment, so that children could freely access and make use of play materials. To achieve the goal, the researcher provided an opportunity to look around play materials in the auditorium material storage for the children. This allows children to choose the play materials they need. In addition, the researcher expanded the play space by allowing children to use play materials in various places such as classrooms and outdoor playgrounds. Based on these experiences, children enjoyed their own unique physical plays by selecting and utilizing various play materials relevant to their own play contexts and contents. However, physical plays between children were still disconnected, and plays were not advanced nor developed due to lack of exchange; there was only a few interactions with children related to various movement elements and safety rules on the children’s physical plays. Thus, the researcher conducted physical play evaluation for second implementation. The researcher made a physical play evaluation area with the tablet PC, so that children could visit that area at any time they wanted. In that area, children observed various physical plays of themselves and other friends. It made children can improve and expand their plays to a higher level by finding the points to supplement their physical plays. Moreover, the play evaluation gave a chance to analyze in-depth the movements, such as the types of movements and movement elements, and think in details about safety rules for physical plays. Second, the changes in the children and a teacher who participated in action research to activate child-initiated physical play using unstructured play materials are as follows. The changes appeared in the children are as follows. First, the children’s interest and a level in physical plays were qualitatively improved, compared to before the action research. Children showed greater preference for physical play in the process of playing freely and using a various of unstructured play materials independently; children constantly investigated and experimented to get more fun from the play. Grounding on the ceaseless motivation, children attempted and challenged a variety of movements utilizing their own bodies; children could recognize the movement in details and their physical abilities improved. In addition, mediated by physical play, children grew holistically while experiencing various fields and having integrated experiences within the 5 areas’ category of the curriculum. Second, the initiative and self-regulation of children as a play leader improved. Moreover, children expressed their opinions with more activeness compared to before the action research in a variety of daily routines. In the process of demonstrating initiative, children experienced an increase in confidence and a sense of achievement, and their self-regulation skills improved, such as following the rules crucial for safety and community life. Next, in terms of the teacher, the changes are as follows. First, continuous observations and recording of the physical plays helped the teacher better understand the children’s play contexts and play flows. This process made it possible to establish what is the teacher's role to activate physical plays. Second, the teacher came to trust that guaranteeing children's initiative is equal to supporting the children to make their potential to be manifested. In addition, through the experience of supporting child-initiated physical play, the teacher could restore the teacher's competence as a play supporter. It made the teacher able to support children's plays in a self-confident manner.
