The main purpose of this research was to present an in-depth and a new understanding of what the experience of outdoor play has on a two- year-old toddler by observing the experience that the toddler intakes from outdoor play and defining the educational meaning of such experiences. For the purpose of this study, the researcher designated 21 two-year-old toddlers and 3 teachers of ‘A’ child-care center located in B city of Gyeonggi- Do as subjects of this study, and used numerous research methods to collect data such as participant observation, ethnographic interview, and other documents. The research was carried out between June, 2006 and February 2007. Research question: What experience do two-year-old toddlers earn from outdoor play, and what is the educational meaning behind this? First, toddlers at the playground earned the chance of cognitive development through dynamic exploration and exposed symbolic play. As they are in the years where they are most keen to experience the world through their senses, toddlers use the co-existence of natural and artificial characteristics of the playground to better understand their surroundings through a sensual, direct, and dynamic experience. When toddlers would come upon an interesting object during their outdoor play, they would constantly explore the object through direct manipulation. Then, they would take-in the experience as their own, using their five senses. Through this process, the toddler showed an active learning attitude by using his or her body and senses as tools in order to take in the numerous concepts and knowledge of the world. Also, toddlers at the playground could experience a more expanded world of imagination. When toddlers reach the age of 2 their capacity of make-believe develop through decentration, decontextualization, and integration. For these two-year-old toddlers with such developmental characteristics, the playground which possess features such as unstructured play objects, play facilities, and large space acts as an instrument for toddlers to improve their capacity of make-believe and experience a new world of imagination. Toddlers grow cognitively by developing their improved capacity of make- believe. Also, through such symbolic experiences, toddlers improve their social skills by experiencing 'make-believe signaling and counteractions for such signals' more frequently. Second, toddlers can meet different types of people at the playground, thereby experiencing numerous forms of social relations. Primarily, as the outdoor playground is wider, more adaptable, and more nature-friendly than indoors, toddlers can enjoy the experience of sharing physical activities and appreciating nature with their peers. Such experiences created an atmosphere of ‘getting along with friends’, which allowed toddlers to get along even with friends that they were normally not very close with. Also, this outdoor experience acted as a ‘relationship-knot’ for toddlers to experience associative play, different from their ordinary play types such as solitary play and parallel play. If the relationship between a toddler and his peers is a horizontal relationship, his relationship with younger and older children is a vertical relationship. This vertical relationship differs from the vertical relationship that the toddler has with his siblings or his parents. The toddler acquires a unique emotional and social experience from the vertical relationship with younger and older children. The toddler also encounters conflicts with younger and older children because of the age difference and the covert order of ranks. On the other hand, the toddler also experienced pro-social experiences such as mutual understanding and consideration with the younger and older children. At the playground, teachers switched their roles as an instructor, and toddlers more aggressively attempted interaction with these teachers. Through such changes, toddlers experienced more body contact with teachers which increased their emotional interaction and support. Finally, at the playground, toddlers were able to interact and form a social relationship with teachers from other classes and even with faculty members. With the overwhelming support of the teachers related to toddlers' play and with the positive emotional relations with other faculty members, toddlers earned the support that led to the improvement of their cognitiveㆍemotionalㆍsocial development. Third, toddlers experienced a sense of freedom and stability through outdoor play. The openness and natural-ness of the playground gave toddlers the opportunity to release their desire of movement, action, and vocal-expression that had been previously suppressed within the classroom. Two- year-old toddlers were free to move around in open nature and could experience emotional freedom by making different types of vocal-expressions that represent their thoughts and feelings through singing, shouting, laughing, talking, and so on. The playground was an area where toddlers relieved their negative feelings and purify their emotions. The playground not only gave them freedom, but also, stability. The playground was the space that allowed them to relieve the stress that they felt during adaptation process to their first-ever social environment, child- care center, and earn emotional support. They would use the playground as a place to move around as they please and a place to play with things such as water, sand, and play facilities. All of these actions relieved the toddlers' stress and unstableness. Such features of the playground allowed toddlers to better achieve the separation with their parents by providing them with emotional stability and calmness, and helped toddlers to successfully adapt into the lived-worlds of the child-care center. Lastly, toddlers experienced a sense of achievement through physical play. Since the playground is a flexible and open space, toddlers were able to exercise their urge and need to utilize their developed physical abilities through physical play, which had been restricted due to the closed environment of there classroom in where they were previously positioned. Through the process, toddlers learned new physical abilities and actions through trial and error of working their immature bodies, and were able to earned a sense of achievement through the experience of success. This was not only a search for a more developed physical ability, movement, or knowledge of the surrounding environments, but for the process of finding a healthier ego.
