The unprecedented energy demand triggered the revival of Li metal as the anode for the lithium-metal batteries (LMBs), which are prospective candidate for the development of post rechargeable batteries. Quasi-solid-state electrolytes are attracting considerable attention with the promise of enabling the utilization of Li metal as the anode. Nevertheless, the limited Li transport efficiency of solid-state electrolytes hinder practical applications of LMBs. Therefore, significant improvements to Li transport efficiency and ionic conductivity are a requirement for practical solid lithium metal batteries. Firstly, optimization of both mechanical properties and ionic conductivity is important. A selective Li+ conductive solid-state electrolyte (SLCSE) that consists of highly conductive yet mechanically robust, anion-immobilized (CMA) polymer matrix based on epoxy-amine reaction of rigid-flexible coupled ether-abundant epoxy monomers and branched polyamine, is reported. Rationally incorporated rigid benzene-ring constituents in ether-abundant polymer matrix not only enhance mechanical strength but also boost Li+ transportation by suppressing crystallinity. The semi-interpenetrating network of CMA matrix and polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVdF-HFP) displays synergistic Li+ acceleration behavior by promoting dissociation and diffusion of Li+ while immobilizing anions. As a result, the SLCSE shows improved Li+ transport efficiency. Also, uniform Li+ deposition behavior enables Li dendrite suppression, thereby leading to better charge/discharge behaviors. Secondly, UV-crosslinked composite electrolyte constituting semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) with morphology-controlled metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are introduced. Two types of Bi-MOFs – CAU-17 sheets and CAU-17 rods – are fabricated by modulating growth direction during the hydrothermal process. The incorporation of the MOFs in the polymer electrolytes allow construction of anion-immobilized fluidic nanochannels in the MOFs, which play vital role in facilitating fast Li transportation and securing stable interfaces with the electrodes. As a result, the composite polymer electrolytes with CAU-17 rods show high ionic conductivity and transference number. Also, corresponding LMB full cells fabricated with Li metal anode and LiNi0.7Co0.1Mn0.2 cathode show high discharge capacity. They show excellent cycling performance illustrating improved interfacial stability owing to the fluidic nanochannels of the MOFs. Also, a new class of composite electrolyte constituting elastic polymer matrix and hierarchical Bi-MOF, is reported. The Bi-MOFs with hierarchical pore structure are designed via modulating the solvents in the hydrothermal process. Enhanced pore size and pore volume facilitates Li ion transport mechanism and increases ion conductivity of the composite polymer electrolyte. UV-cured Bi-MOF incorporated composite polymer electrolyte (U-MCPE) exhibit high conductivity with high transference number, and U-MCPE based LMBs (composed of Li metal anode and LiNi0.7Co0.1Mn0.2 cathode) deliver high discharge capacity. Also, they show superior cycling performance owing to uniform Li deposition behavior suppressing Li dendrite formation.
