This study was initiated to investigate changes in perceptions and attitudes and understanding experiences of 'Deaf people, Deaf culture, and sign language' of hearing adults who participated in sign language lectures called 'Sign Language Education Program with Deaf and Hearing People.' The sign language education program designed for this study consisted of 9 steps: 'Determination of course opening and student recruitment, Program start, Pre-survey, Individual interview with students, End of lecture, Post-survey, Descriptive survey, Group interview with students, and Analysis results, and summary.' The lectures were held in 8 sessions of 90 minutes each from 6 May to 24 June 2022, with 12 students in the multipurpose classroom at the Motxxx Library in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea.
In order to measure the quantitative change in the students' awareness and attitude toward sign language, Deaf and Deaf culture, pre- and post-surveys were conducted. The surveys consisted of 15 questions on 3 items about sign language, 15 questions on 3 items about Deaf and Deaf culture, and a total of 30 questions. Also, a descriptive questionnaire about the experiences of understanding sign language, Deaf, and Deaf culture was conducted after the end of the education program. In order to confirm the qualitative change, two interviews were conducted.
The ultimate goal was that the experience of understanding sign language, Deaf people, and Deaf culture provided to hearing adults by this program positively affected their perceptions and attitudes toward sign language, Deaf people, and Deaf culture. In fact, in the results of the pre- and post-survey conducted to identify attitudes, perceptions, and knowledge about sign language and Deaf people during the program, there was a difference between a minimum of 17 points and a maximum of 59.5 points. It means significant improvement after taking the program. In individual interviews, group interviews, and descriptive surveys, the experiences of understanding sign language and Deaf people were also positive.
The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, the 'Sign Language Education Program Progressed by Deaf and Hearing People' positively affected the perception and attitude toward the sign language of students. The students recognized Korean sign language as an attractive language with creative and diverse expressions, and deeply understood Korean sign language as a language. Second, the sign language education program also had a very positive effect on the awareness and attitude of the Deaf and the Deaf culture of the students. Most of the students easily understood and became more interested in the Deaf and the Deaf culture thanks to the lectures by the Deaf instructor. Comprehensively, the experience of understanding the Korean sign language of students who participated in the sign language education program was positive. In the individual interview, group interview, and descriptive questionnaire, the students answered that they experienced positive changes in sign language and Deaf by participating in this education program.
