The purpose of this study is to identify the obstacles in the process of accessing performing arts for the blind and visually impaired, and to further develop barrier-free performances while achieving the same level of cultural enjoyment as the non-disabled by expanding the concept of accessibility. In-depth interviews were conducted with blind or visually impaired participants along with their family members, and also with performance facility workers, making the total number of participants 10. Participants in the study talked about physical·informational accessibility obstacles such as the need of enhancement in convenience along with those in the artistic experience accessibility factor such as the need to improve awareness of disability characteristics and types. Based on the results of the study, a case study of the domestic barrier-free opera was conducted. Based on the research results, the following implications could be derived. First, it is necessary to specify laws and regulations in 「The Convenience Act for Persons with Disabilities」 that take into account the characteristics of disabilities, along with the need to categorize the regulations related to follow-up management in the use of convenience facilities. Second, the problem of access to performing arts for the blind and visually impaired should be expanded from the former physical and informational accessibility to accessibility in artistic experience, and accessibility improvement measures such as a pre-performance approach should be prepared accordingly. Third, in light of the aging population it is necessary to discuss methods in improving awareness in the different degrees of disability for the elderly. as well as ways to enhance access to performing arts. Based on the obstacles and improvements for accessibility needed in the field of performance arts for the blind and visually impaired found in this study, a follow-up study considering the type, characteristics, and degree of disability for the development of barrier-free performances in Korea is proposed.
