The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the therapeutic songwriting program on interpersonal relationships and self-expression for middle school students school who experience adjustment difficulties. The participants in this study were the second and third graders of middle school recruited from alternative schools, school A and school B located in Seoul, with 8 experimental groups and 8 control groups. From November 1, 2022 to December 7, 2022, the program was conducted twice a week for 50 minutes for the experimental group. The interpersonal skill scale and self-expression scale were used to compare the difference between pre- and post-test of the interpersonal skills and self-expression skills of the the experimental group and the control group. The data collected in this study were analyzed by performing the Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon signed rank test using the SPSS 28.0 statistical program. As a result of the analysis, there was a significant difference in overall interpersonal relationships between experiments and control groups, and among the sub-factors, statistically significant changes were shown in friendliness, satisfaction, openness, and communication, but not in understanding and trust. In addition, through the therapeutic songwriting program, there was a significant difference in overall self-expression between the experimental group and the control group through the therapeutic songwriting program, and among the sub-factors, content self-expression showed the sigificant difference. Whease, there was not a measurable difference in verbal expression. Nonverbal self-expression showed a significant difference in both the experimental group and the control group. Therefore, this study suggests the possibility that therapeutic songwriting program can be effectively used as a therapeutic tool to deal with the improvement of interpersonal skills and self-expression skills of middle school students in alternative schools in the future clinical settings.
