The battery market is growing rapidly with a significant increase in demand. Li–air batteries (LABs) have received a lot of attention because of their much higher energy density than that of conventional Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the poor cyclability of LABs due to the impurity gas from the outside, the formation of high-resistance reaction products on the cathode, and the growth of Li dendrites seriously limit their practical application. In addition, the liquid electrolyte can leak and evaporate in this open system, leading to a battery fire. Solid electrolytes have received the most attention in recent electrolyte research because of their stability. However, solid electrolytes have limitations in terms of ionic conductivity and interfacial resistance between components. To address the issue, a quasi-solid composite polymer electrolyte (QSCPE) designed by integrating a free-standing composite solid electrolyte membrane and a liquid electrolyte has been proposed to reduce the interfacial resistance between the electrode and the electrolyte and improve the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte. We used a simple solution casting method and activation in a liquid electrolyte to synthesize a quasi-solid PVDF-HFP-based electrolyte containing a fibrous NASICON-type LAGP filler. The QSCPE exhibited a high ionic conductivity of 1.29 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 30 C and a wide electrochemical stability up to about 5.1 V vs Li/Li+. The overpotential of Li/QSCPE/Li symmetric cell showed under 100 mV. In addition, the cell employing Pure QSPE showed a cycle life of 125, but the cell employing QSCPE showed a cycle life of more than 250 cycles, more than twice cycle life compared to the cell employing Pure QSPE at a current density of 1.0 mA cm-2. The Li–O2 cell employing QSCPE showed significantly improved cyclability with a cycle life of 147 compared to the Li–O2 cell without QSCPE. The QSCPE was effective in preventing contamination of the Li electrode by impurities penetrating from the cathode side while suppressing the growth of Li dendrites. Therefore, QSCPE containing LAGP nanofibers can be proposed as a potential electrolyte for high-performance Li–air batteries.
