Due to resource depletion, high fluctuating costs, and uncoordinated distribution of fossil fuels around the world, along with the concerns arising from their use; such as environmental pollution and global warming, finding an alternative source of energy seems to be necessary. Besides, the strict environmental laws in force have made it inevitable to look for efficient, sustainable, and green energy sources in order to save the environment from fossil fuel footprints. On the other hand, the production of a massive amount of waste by the municipal and livestock industry sections around the world and inappropriate disposal approaches have resulted in crucial environmental impacts. According to this point of view, this dissertation investigates the potential of catalytic gasification and pyrolysis for the valorization of biomass wastes (biowaste) towards the generation of green hydrogen (H2) as sustainable fuels and the substitute for fossil fuels in industrial applications. Overall, the catalytic gasification of food waste, furniture waste, and cow manure over different Ni-loaded catalysts under various gasifying agents (steam, air, and CO2) was conducted for H2 generation along with the reduction of harmful content in liquid products of gasification at the same time in this dissertation. Meanwhile, the catalytic pyrolysis of food waste over Ni-based catalysts was also performed with the same targets. In the first study, steam and air gasification of food waste over 5wt.% Ni/Al2O3 eggshell-type (Ni-EG) and 5wt.% Ni/Al2O3 homo-type (Ni-H) catalysts were performed to produce H2-rich gaseous products and liquid products (bio-oil) with less harmful content. In non-catalytic cases, a higher volume of H2 was produced via steam gasification, while air gasification resulted in a higher CO, CO2, and C1-C4 content. In catalytic experiments, higher values of H2-rich gases and low C2-C4 content were obtained over Ni-EG in comparison with Ni-H catalyst, particularly in steam gasification at 800 °C, producing 59.48 vol% of H2. In contrast, steam gasification applying the Ni-EG catalyst mitigated the harmful contents of the bio-oil, such as benzene derivatives and heterocyclic compounds. Consequently, the proper diffusion of Ni particles on the external layer of γ-Al2O3 pellets in Ni-EG enhanced its activity, selectivity, and stability than Ni-H during gasification reactions. This study emphasizes the beneficial aspects of food waste gasification in alleviating its disposal problems and producing valuable products. In the next study, air gasification of furniture waste was carried out employing Ni-loaded ultra-stable Y-type zeolites (Ni-USY) as the catalyst to generate H2 and bio-oil with less detrimental content. On this basis, the effects of following parameters were investigated: SiO2/Al2O3 ratios of 5, 30, and 60, Ni loading amounts of 5, 10, 20, and 30 wt.% on the support, as well as reaction temperatures of 700, 750, and 800 °C. Using Ni-USY (5) led to higher gas yield (72.19 wt.%), higher H2 and CO production (31.94 vol.% and 34.57 vol.%, respectively), and lower CH4 and C2-C4 yields compare to those achieved by the Ni-USY(30) and Ni-USY(60). This was attributed to the more metallic Ni inside Ni-USY (5) pores compared to the other two catalysts, resulting in a longer contact time between the reactants and metallic Ni sites which induces the water-gas shift, steam-carbon, and steam-methane reforming reactions. Further increase in Ni loading (20 wt.%) resulted in higher H2 and CO concentrations (41.16 vol.% and 38.62 vol.%, respectively), while a significant reduction observed in further increasing of Ni loading. Moreover, increasing the temperature led to enhancement of H2 and CO yields, and reduction of CO2, CH4, and C2-C4 yields. The concentration of detrimental compounds such as benzene derivatives, phenolics, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in bio-oil were considerably mitigated by employing the Ni-USY (5). Overall, air gasification over Ni-USY catalysts offers a promising technology to transform furniture waste into H2-rich syngas with low contents of harmful contaminants. In another study, Ni-loaded Al2O3 catalysts were synthesized applying the alkaline-earth metals (Mg and Sr) promoters and were employed in the cow manure gasification under CO2 conditions to generate valuable syngas (H2 + CO). The results showed that the highest yield of syngas, the lowest yield of bio-oil and coke as well as the highest H2 and CO selectivity (34.23 vol.% and 37.16 vol.%, respectively) were achieved by applying Sr on Ni-Al2O3 (SN-AO). This was ascribed to facilitating Boudouard and dry reforming reactions due to high dispersion of Ni particles and the dominance of Ni metallic instead of NiO on the catalyst surface in Sr- Ni/Al2O3. Meanwhile, Sr- Ni/Al2O3 demonstrated better performance in declining CO2 production due to its appropriate basicity which caused high capability in capturing CO2. With enhancing the temperature from 750 oC to 850 oC, the yield of syngas and H2 increased considerably. CO2 condition augmented the yield of syngas and selectivity of H2 and CO compare to those under the N2 condition. It is demonstrated that the efficiency of cow manure CO2 gasification to produce H2- and CO- enriched syngas can be enhanced effectively by the addition of Sr into Ni/Al2O3 catalyst. In addition, the pyrolysis of food waste, as an environmentally safe waste disposal method, was carried out using Ni-EG and Ni-H catalysts under N2 and CO2 environments at different temperatures (500-700 oC) to produce value-added gaseous products while lowering the detrimental condensable components in bio-oil. Catalytic pyrolysis utilizing Ni-EG obtained a comparably higher gas yield while a lower proportion of bio-oil compared to Ni-H. Likewise, the greater volume percent of H2 and CO along with the less content of C2-C4 were generated using Ni-EG catalyst in comparison with Ni-H catalyst. In addition, simultaneous use of Ni-EG and CO2 effectively mitigated the cyclic content in bio-oil (such as benzene derivatives), showing their synergic effects in the pyrolysis process. This is also facilitated the ring-opening reaction and the free radical mechanism leading to converting the carbon distribution from condensable content to the gaseous species. Besides, Ni-EG indicated longer stability than Ni-H because of lower formation of coke. Increasing temperature caused to increase in H2 and CO and a decline in CO2 in produced gas, besides the generation of destructive content in bio-oil increased with enhancing temperature from 500 oC to 600 °C, followed by a reduction at 700 °C. This study suggested that CO2 catalytic pyrolysis applying Ni-EG catalyst can be an eco-friendly and sustainable approach for the disposal of food waste.
