This study started taking note of the idea that the attitude of dealing with the entrance in the royal tombs of Joseon Dynasty which is a modern space created according to necessity should be different from the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. The entrance to any destination is an important space that requires a symbolic role in that it provides the first image in addition to the function that must be accepted. There was a need for specific plans on how the identity of the royal tombs of Joseon Dynasty would be conveyed at the entrance. The current status of the entrance spaces of the royal tombs of Joseon Dynasty was analyzed to identify the functions accommodated in the entrance space according to this background. The experience characteristics of visitors at the entrance space were analyzed and the aspect of Design and Construction of the entrance space of the royal tomb of Joseon Dynasty was derived by understanding the spatial composition in which detailed functional spaces are arranged. This study was conducted through a literature review and through field survey. Maintenance and configuration directions were considered by analyzing the research on the establishment of 'Mid to long-term Plans on Conservation, Management, Utilization of Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty(in 2015 and 2021)' and the reports published by the Cultural Heritage Administration. The scope of the entrance space was determined through an analysis of the location and surrounding status of the entrance space for each royal tomb of the Joseon Dynasty. The entrance space was drawn and mapped after examining the traffic and pedestrian movement lines and facilities and buildings in the entrance space. The connection between the use of the surrounding land of the entrance space and the annual number of visitors. The characteristics of the space composition were identified by examining the functional space according to the components of the entrance space. The results of this study as follows. First, the land use around the entrance space and the current status of the entrance space were analyzed. It was found that the surrounding land use has a correlation with the annual number of visitors and is a factor influencing the Design and Construction of the entrance space as a result of the analysis. In addition, it is necessary to continuously identify and improve problems according to the location of the royal tomb and the use of surrounding land. There are some needs to continuously respond to the increase in the number of visitors and active use of the surrounding natural landscape and continuous management and improvement in the direction of securing the identity of the royal tomb entrance space by securing connectivity with the surroundings. Second, the function of the entrance space was analyzed. The entrance space of the royal tombs of Joseon Dynasty is divided into eight categories by function: information, parking, passage, access control, management, convenience, recess, and exhibition and there are differences in the functions applied according to the surrounding conditions of each royal tomb. Essential functions are information, parking, access control, and convenience functions which are necessary for royal tombs and other functions such as passage, management, recess, and exhibition are added according to the characteristics of each entrance space. All problems must be continuously identified and improved according to the size and characteristics of the entrance space for each royal tomb since the function of the entrance space is related to the size of the entrance space, the number of annual visitors and the access method. It should be continuously managed and improved in the direction of rationalization of irrational space arrangement, optimization of narrow space scale, and synergy utilization with the surrounding landscape. Third, the space experience characteristics of each space of the entrance space were analyzed. The royal tombs of Joseon are divided into four sections: symbolic space, passage space, central space, and transition space, as the section where spatial experience changes according to the order of the visitors' space experience. The symbolic space is a space that gives visitors a sense of psychological intimidation and expectation as they enter the royal tomb entrance. The passage space is a space for inducing natural and comfortable access by foreshadowing the direction toward the entrance of the ticket office after parking or for example of the entrance when moving on foot. The central space is a space where you purchase a ticket to enter the royal tomb and it is a space where convenient facilities necessary for users are intensively arranged so that the space can be recognized. The transition space is a space where you pay a ticket at the checkbox and enter the interior and it is a space that makes you feel solemn in the continuous movement of the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. All problems must be continuously identified and improved according to the characteristics of the surrounding conditions for each royal tomb and scale of entrance space. It is necessary to find and restore the elements that have lost expectations due to the scenery exposed from the outside. It was found that continuous management and improvement should be needed through rational spatial arrangement by continuously analyzing the problems of the royal tombs lacking symbolism in the entrance space of the royal tombs where the size of the entrance space was minimized due to the small number of visitors. The royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009 in recognition of their historical and universal value as a tomb of a single dynasty that lasted intact for 500 years. Accordingly, the Cultural Heritage Administration pursued various utilization projects along with an academic approach, starting with the ‘Research on the Restoration Plan for the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty’ to change and maintain the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty with integrity, authenticity, and universal value. Accordingly, the Cultural Heritage Administration started the ‘Research on the Restoration Plan for the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty’ to change and maintain them into the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty with integrity, authenticity and universal value, and promoted various utilization projects along with an academic approach. However, it is understood that the landscaping field has not been given a leading role in the work of changing the entrance space of the royal tombs of Joseon Dynasty which has been developed so far due to various institutional and realistic conditions. The attitude of dealing with the entrance space, which is a modern space created for a different need from the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, should be different. This study is not only a passive and minimal landscaping study but a detailed study on the design of the entrance space and the location of facilities that reflect the principles of the Design and Construction of the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty and the landscape of each royal tomb. It suggests that it has the potential to arouse expectations for the mysterious realm inside the royal tomb, along with providing a dignified image. Afterwards, an opportunity to develop the entrance space of the royal tombs of Joseon into a more diverse and global space by additionally researching the functional and experiential space of the space and literature data centering on the modern entrance space of various world cultural heritages.
