The purpose of this study was to establish the characteristics of urban streams and their eco-cultural identity through eco-cultural interpretation of each water system, targeting Suwon City, where the water system was the center in the process of urban formation and urban development. As the name Suwon indicates, streams and reservoirs are developed in Suwon City. The total length of the stream is 58.88km. The total length of the channel is 73.68km. And the total basin area is 197.5㎢. Among them, Suwoncheon, Seohocheon, Woncheonricheon, and Hwanggujicheon run through the city and form major water systems. Suwon City has been rapid urbanizing since industrialization as a metropolitan city, and has expanded its urban space by developing stream basins. In the process, the water system was changed along with urban changes, and it is being used as a living space for local residents through stream pollution, cover, and restoration processes. The urban transformation of Suwon has been through the stages of urban formation, the construction of Hwaseong, the prototype of Suwon, the Japanese colonial period, the urban reconstruction period after liberation, the urban development period, the urban development period, and the urban maturation period. It has been changed from the stream pollution period, stream cover and ecological restoration period, to the hydrophilic culture period. As a result of analyzing the eco-cultural characteristics of the water system in Suwoncity, Suwoncheon is a local stream with a length of 9.45km. Going south through Gwanggyo Reservoir, crossing the city center, and joining Hwanggujicheon in Daehwanggyo-dong. All sections were restored as ecological streams, and land use around the streams was divided into 4 sections in the process of urban transformation. As for cultural resources, historical resources are mainly distributed in the section within Hwaseong Fortress, and humanities resources are distributed in the section from Jidong bridge to Maegyo bridge. Waterfront facilities are built on the banks of streams. The ecological ratio evaluated as the ecological space of the stream was different for each section. Waterbirds mainly appeared in areas where wetland grasslands were distributed. The stream embankment is a right-angled retaining wall in all sections, and a rapid is created in the channel. Seohocheon is a local stream with a length of 11.50km. Originating from Pajangdong Mountain(367m), descends south, and joining Hwanggujicheon in Jangji-dong. From Imok bridge upstream to Nongdaegyo bridge, it has been restored as an ecological stream, and from Jungbogyo bridge downstream it has not been restored. The surrounding land use is divided into three sections. Cultural resources are mainly distributed around Chukmanje Reservoir, and most of them are related to agriculture. In the restored section of the waterfront facility, a promenade is installed along the stream bank. The ratio of biotope ecology in the stream is the highest at 921%. In the non-restored section, and more than 60% in the remaining sections. Among wild birds, waterbirds appeared in all sections. The stream embankment is made of earth, the restored section of the stream has a rapid, and the unrestored section has weirs and drop holes. The biotope ecology rates of Manseokgeo and Chukmanje Reservoir on the water system are 83.7%. And 85.8%. Respectively, and a park is built around them. Woncheonricheon is a local stream with a length of 9km. The water discharged from the source reservoir forms the water system. Except for the upstream Gwanggyo New Town, the surrounding land use is divided into two. Cultural resources are distributed in the section where the Samsung Electronics industrial site is located. As for the stream restoration, the Samsung Electronics industrial site section was restored in the 2000s, and the biotope ecological ratio was 65.8%, And a rapid was created in the stream. The downstream section is in an unrestored state, And the biotope ecology ratio is 77.6%, and there are weirs and drop holes in the channel. The stream embankment is made of earth and natural stones. Waterbirds were observed in all sections. Hwanggujicheon is a local stream with a length of 13.18km. It flows south from Wangsong Reservoir and joins with Seohocheon in Jangji-dong, and with Suwoncheon and Woncheonricheon in Daehwanggyo-dong. The surrounding land use is divided into two categories. From the bottom of Wangsong Reservoir to Geumgok Bridge, the entire area is agricultural land, and the biotope ecology rate is 92.3%. In the downstream section, agricultural land and high-color industrial complexes are located, and the biotope ecological rate is 87.8%. The stream is in an unrestored state as a whole, and there are weirs and drop holes in the channel. The embankments of the stream were all made of soil, and among wild birds, waterfowl was observed in all sections. The biotope ecological ratio of Ilwol Reservoir is 90.4%, And a park is built around it. As a result of eco-cultural analysis of the water system of Suwon City, Suwoncheon stream was used and developed for feng shui geography, daily use and drainage system, agricultural water, and urban water control during the construction of Hwaseong New Town in the late Joseon Dynasty. During the Japanese colonial period, the water system was formed by constructing the Gwanggyo Reservoir, and the stream structure was changed as weirs and artificial embankments were installed to supply agricultural water to the stream. In the process of urban development, the stream was damaged and covered as it was used as a passage for washing, water intake, and sewage treatment. Covering the stream brought about a change in the interest and awareness of the local residents, and led to the ecological restoration of the stream along with the birth of the environmental movement. As the stream was restored, the biotope and wild bird habitat were also restored, and a water-friendly facility was installed inside the stream to be used as a living space for city residents. Therefore, Suwoncheon has been the backbone of urban development since it was operated as a daily use and drainage system for Hwaseong, the original city of Suwon, and can be interpreted as a stream containing historical and cultural heritage and various social and cultural contents. Seohocheon stream is a water system formed when Manseokgeo and Chukmanje reservoirs were built by blocking the waterway of Seohocheon for agricultural management necessary for maintaining the operation of Hwaseong in the late Joseon Dynasty. During the Japanese colonial period Department of Best Practice An agricultural and forestry school was located there, and after liberation, it was inherited by the Rural Development Administration and the College of Agriculture of Seoul National University, leaving tangible and intangible ecological cultural heritages such as development of unified rice, early night school for rural enlightenment, evergreen spirit, and Saemaeul movement. In the process of urban transformation, stream basins were mostly transformed into urban areas, and stream structure changes and stream ecology were damaged in the process of urban development. In the 2000s, it was ecologically restored from the upper stream to the Agricultural Bridge, and waterfront facilities were installed in the restored section to be used as a living space for local residents. Seohocheon can be interpreted as an agricultural history stream containing the identity of the Mecca of Korean agriculture. The water system was formed in Woncheonricheon stream during the Japanese colonial era when Woncheon Reservoir and Sindae Reservoir were built, and it was used as agricultural water. In the 1970s, as the site of Samsung Electronics, watersheds began to be developed and urbanized rapidly. From the bottom of Woncheon Reservoir to Baeknyeon Bridge, it has been restored as an ecological stream. Along with the restoration of biotope and wild bird habitat, water-friendly facilities have been installed and are being used as a living space for local residents. 1/3 of the streams have the landscape of Samsung Digital City. Therefore, Woncheonricheon can be interpreted as a stream that led the industrialization and urbanization of Suwon City. Hwanggujicheon stream has been designated as a development restricted area for a long time since the water system was formed with the construction of Wangsong Reservoir. Since the 1990s Geumgok district, Chilbo district, and Homaesil district were developed through the adjustment of administrative districts and the government's housing construction policy, but the urban landscape began to appear in the stream basin, but the surrounding land use is still agricultural land. All of the streams are in an unrestored state, and the surrounding agricultural landscape is excellent and has ecology close to that of a natural stream. As a result of ecological and cultural interpretation, the type of stream in Suwoncity changed due to human settlement and urban development. It can be seen that it has changed from a natural stream to a historical and cultural stream, an agricultural history stream, a rural stream, an industrial landscape stream, an ecological restoration stream, a hydrophilic stream, and an ecological stream. Therefore, for the systematic and efficient management of urban stream ecology and culture coexisting, it was necessary to manage according to the stream type by reflecting the history and ecological interpretation results of the stream.
