This phenomenological research studies young people who have experienced seclusion. Referring to the original Japanese term "Hikikomori," a reclusive loner is a Korean expression for someone experiencing isolation. The phenomenon surged when Japan's economic recession began in the early 1990s, becoming a severe social problem. It began to be reported in Korea and became an issue in the early 2000s. Still, despite its alarming occurrence, it does not have accurate statistics, so much quality research is required to understand and help them adapt to society by using an active intervention. The reclusive loner is not only a matter of the individuals. Still, it is also likely to expand to social problems such as breaking down the traditional family system and causing the loss of human social resources. To this end, this study was analyzed by applying Giorgi (1985)'s phenomenological and qualitative research method. The purpose of the study is to learn about the phenomenon of reclusive young people to change the perception of this situation when the reality is that even the authorities cannot produce the current official statistics of them. At the same time, the numbers continue to surge for various reasons. In addition, it is to prevent promising young people from falling into the fallacy of seclusion by a lack of policy efforts and to inform that systematic support is needed, as well as a fact-finding survey at the government level. The data of this study were collected from September to November 2022, meeting with ten research participants consisting of young people aged 19 to 34 who experienced seclusion and conducting in-depth interviews. The analysis results constitute an essential topic from the statements of the study participants. As a result of the study, a total of 8 critical issues, 21 revealed topics, and 125 central meanings were derived. The essential themes are "Family Issues," "The Problems," "Into the Dark Cave," "Time of Pitch Black," "The Comeback," "The Struggles," "The Experiences," and "The Advice." Based on this essential theme, the following is a summary of the research results organized by general structural techniques by arranging the experience structure of young people who experienced seclusion. The first essential theme, "Family Issues," consisted of "father's tendency to violence," "unintelligible parents," "conflict with brothers," and "economic problems." Stories about their parents and their first interaction with the world were prevalent. They remembered their parents using physical or verbal violence against them to have control over their will. The family's economic situation was one factor that ignited the father's tendency to violence, and there were cases in which the siblings were also reclusive. It was clear that they get emotionally wounded by projecting each other's images. The second essential topic, "The Problems," consisted of "school violence experience," "difficult relationships with friends," and "psychological difficulties." It was difficult for the study participants to have good relationships with their friends at school because they did not feel stability among family members. So they experienced bullying and school violence at school. Many cases show study participants struggling with relationships. The third essential theme, "Into the Dark Cave," consists of "running away from reality," "explosion of anger," and "deciding to be isolated." They tried to survive, but nothing came back beside a psychological challenge. It eventually deprived them of trying. Furthermore, they naturally went to seclusion by running away from reality. Despite their claim that there was no motivation for solitude, the accumulated anger was the culprit. In addition, they felt more freedom while voluntarily choosing isolation. The fourth essential theme is "Time of Pitch Black," and the demonstrated articles are "time like death" and "positive aspects." The study participants who entered the time of seclusion just spent time watching their phones or watching YouTube, lying stunned and turning their backs on the world. However, there were also positive elements during those times that supported them in that situation—such as having a chance to consult, having time to organize anew, and obtaining an objective view. The fifth essential theme is "The Comeback," and the revealed pieces are "discovery of sharehouse" and "the Seclusion Master Program." They try to break the seclusion. However, unfortunately, they don't know how. At this time, it was the Share House and the Seclusion Master Program that reached out to them. Life in the share house is a good stepping stone to start caring for yourself and promoting your daily life. Through The Seclusion Master Program, a mentor with experience in reclusive affairs consulted with them, trying to help them overcome the difficulties. The sixth essential topic is "The Struggles," which is a topic that displays "still difficult relationships," "trying what you're good at," and "obstacles." For example, research participants who came out of seclusion struggled because of what they tried and couldn't do while adapting to society. They were still troubled by complex relationship problems but prepared for employment by obtaining suspended studies or certificates. But then, there was a time of frustration due to encountering obstacles. The seventh essential topic is "The Experiences," indicating "understanding of oneself" and "expansive understanding." The seclusion was a time to get to know themselves by trying to learn their feelings and how to feel them well. By stopping self-blaming, They understood others more deeply as well as themselves. The last essential theme was "The Advice"; the revealed themes were 'coming out' and 'asking for help.' It is a piece of advice from experienced once secluded people to young people in the situation. They say faith is the key to your success, mentioning not to be nervous; accept yourself and wait for the time to come. Those with experiences in seclusion should psychologically support those who want to escape it. Based on the research results, the significance of the study on young people experiencing seclusion is as follows; First, it is the research on the relationship between young people who have experienced aloneness. Second, it informs people that they could escape isolation through share houses and the Seclusion Master Program. Third, it was analyzed with Graham's systematic theological methodology for their fundamental improvement. To thoroughly understand the experience of seclusion, it is necessary to conduct research by securing participants in various environments and situations. And if the research is life-friendly, follow-up research is needed to derive specific solutions. Furthermore, many studies will be conducted to suggest practical and concrete ways for reclusive loners to escape from seclusion and adapt to society, which will help young people experiencing or out of isolation.
