To overcome climate change, emission regulation for internal combustion engine is being tightened around the world. and the spread of eco-friendly vehicles such as electric vehicles is expanding. However, along with the increase in the number of electric vehicle registration, the number of electric vehicle fires is also steadily increasing. Fire suppression of an electric vehicle is more difficult than that of a typical internal combustion engine due to thermal runaway, in which battery cells explode in a chain. In additon, exclusive parking areas and charging facilities for electric vehicles are steadily installed underground, but there are no safety regulations corresponding to them. In the case of underground parking lots, they are not subject to mandatory installation of smoke control facilities, they are often not equipped with smoke control facilities, which is feared to increase fire damage. In response to these problems, this study conducted an analysis through simulation to prepare a plan to improve Available Safe Egress Time(ASET) in the event of an electric vehicle fire in an underground parking lot. The simulation used Fire Dynamic Simulator(FDS), a Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)-based program developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST), and the subject of analysis is the underground parking lot of the S power plant's office building. In the event of an electric vehicle fire, we analyzed how the ASET to the escape stairs changes as the location of the ignition source, the installation of the smoke barrier, and the increase in the volumetric flowrate of induced fans. The simulation results for each scenario were compared and analyzed, and the following results were obtained. 1) It was confirmed that ASET increased when a fire broke out far from the escape stairs. Therefore, it is safe to install an electric vehicle-only parking area on the ground, not on the underground floor, but if an electric vehicle-only parking area is inevitably installed underground, it must be installed far from the escape stairs and close to the parking lot entrance and exit ramps. 2) It was confirmed that the ASET increased when the smoke control wall was installed and the fire compartment was applied. Therefore, it is necessary to install smoke barriers of more than 1 [m] in front of the electric vehicle parking compartment to prevent the spread of fire to other areas and prevent the spread of smoke to the surrounding area. Furthermore for effective fire suppression, it is necessary to install a water plate around of the fire compartment. Through this, it is necessary to configure a water tank to cover the vehicle in the event of a fire to fill the height of the vehicle battery to lower the temperature of the battery and prevent thermal runaway. 3) It was confirmed that the ASET generally increases when the air volumetric flowrate of the induced fan is increased, but may decrease depending on the position of the ignition source. Therefore, further research needs to be conducted on the optimal design (location of the ignition source, air volume and wind direction of the induced fan, etc.) to improve ASET. In the simulation process of this study, I tried to have the same conditions and characteristics for the subject of analysis, but there will be a difference from the actual one. However, using the conclusions of this study, it is expected that follow-up studies for more reasonable and accurate improvement measures will be possible. In addition, although not covered in this study, the smoke control facility is known to help improve the ASET. Therefore, it was suggested that an overall review of the current laws and regulations that exclude parking lots from the installation of smoke control facilities is necessary.
