The purpose of this study is to identify the gap between the research and practice areas of lifelong learning for Korean adults by comparing their keyword usage according to life cycle stages. The aim is to gain an understanding of adult learners’ developmental characteristics based on their life cycle and to suggest a research direction grounded in practical applications. To achieve this objective, the study employed keyword network analysis. The life cycle stages of young adulthood, middle-age, and older adults were defined based on theoretical backgrounds and previous studies. Data collection spanned the latest period from 2012 to 2022. Various search terms related to ‘lifelong learning by life cycle of adults’ were generated for data collection purposes. In the research area, analysis was conducted on academic journals registered with the Korea Citation Index (KCI), while media articles sourced from BigKinds were analyzed for the practice area. This process resulted in the selection of 123 articles on young adulthood, 91 articles on middle-age, and 242 articles on older adults in the research area. In the practice area, 1,556 articles on young adulthood, 207 articles on middle-age, and 2,315 articles on older adults were selected. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, major keywords were derived through keyword frequency and TF-IDF analysis. Differences in keywords between the research and practice areas were identified by classifying them as either homogeneous or heterogeneous. In the young adulthood stage, the research area featured major keywords such as ‘university’ and ‘entrepreneurship’, while the practice area highlighted keywords such as ‘jobs’, ‘entrepreneurship’ and ‘agriculture’. In the middle-age and older adults stages, the research area emphasized keywords like ‘women’ and ‘preparation for life after retirement’, whereas the practice area focused on ‘job’ and ‘job seeker’. For the older adults, the research area highlighted keywords such as ‘life’ and ‘culture and art’, while the practice area centered around ‘job’ and ‘transportation’. The number of shared keywords between the domains appeared in the order of young adulthood, older adults, and middle-age. Second, network differences between the domains were identified by analyzing network structure, keyword centrality, network centrality, and similarity variations. By analyzing degree centrality, closeness centrality, and betweenness centrality of nodes, central nodes in each network were identified, allowing for the analysis of differences in degree centrality of homogeneous nodes between domains. In the young adulthood stage, it was confirmed that the keyword ‘university’ held greater importance in the research area, while ‘job’ and ‘entrepreneurship’ had higher importance in the practice area. In the middle-age research area, ‘women’ and ‘life’ emerged as more significant, while the practice area placed more importance on ‘vocational education and training’. The research area of older adults highlighted ‘culture and art’ and ‘society’, whereas the practice area focused on ‘job’. Finally, quantitative confirmation of network similarity through QAP analysis revealed a high correlation between young adulthood and older adults. Third, Cluster analysis was conducted to identify major themes and issues formed by the keywords. Through this analysis, 5 research areas and 5 practice areas for young adulthood, 5 research areas and 4 practice areas for middle-age, and 4 research areas and 4 practice areas for older adults were derived. The topics with high similarity between research and practice areas were identified as ‘vocational education and training for young adulthood employment and unemployment issues’ in the young adulthood, ‘middle-aged learners participating in education led by lifelong education institutions’ in the middle-age, and ‘smartphones and digital literacy education’ in the older adults. On the other hand, topics with high heterogeneity were observed as ‘multicultural and young adulthood-focused research’ in the research area and ‘agricultural education for young adulthood in local areas’ in the practice area in young adulthood. In the middle-age, the research topics of ‘transition learning for middle-aged women’ and ‘cultural and artistic lifelong learning activities for middle-aged adults’ were not found in the practice area. In the older adults, the research topic of ‘participation in cultural and artistic lifelong learning in the field of literacy and its psychological effects’ and the practice topic of ‘traffic accident and safety education’ appeared most heterogeneous. This study have examined the gap and connections between lifelong learning research and practice across different stages of the adult lifespan. It provides suggestions for lifelong learning research and education closely aligned with the lives and practical experiences of adults, and proposes strategies to improve the integration between research findings and practical implementation.
