As evident from the slogan 'Expanding cultural enjoyment opportunities for socially disadvantaged groups and ensuring their cultural rights' in national cultural and arts policies, there is a growing emphasis on cultural and arts education for socially disadvantaged groups. Education programs for children from multicultural families play a crucial role in eliminating cultural blind spots and providing them with opportunities for cultural enjoyment. Unfortunately, many children from multicultural families face challenges in accessing cultural facilities such as art museums, and they may struggle to participate in online exhibitions or education programs due to limited proficiency in the Korean language. It is crucial to study and provide assistance to these children in order to enhance their cultural welfare.
In this context, the researcher has laid the foundation for the study by defining terms and organizing information about integrated art education for children from multicultural families. The researcher has examined the current state of national policies regarding the education of children from multicultural families and explored existing education programs for these children in public art museums, highlighting the pressing need for further research. Additionally, as a case study, the researcher has conducted an analysis and evaluation of the art education program implemented in Anseong City Daedeok-myeon's Happy Village from 2021 to 2022, and has proposed plans for its development.
The motivation behind the researcher's study and the implementation of art museum education programs for children from multicultural families stems from the persisting issues of discrimination, exclusion, difficulties in adapting to school life, and poor academic performance that many of these children face, despite Korea being a multicultural society. Unfortunately, the participation in art education programs by children from multicultural families remains low due to insufficient understanding, limited opportunities, lack of support, and overall awareness compared to other developed countries.
Art, being based on a formative expression, possesses the unique advantage of communication through visual images, transcending the barriers of written and spoken languages. By engaging in the creation and appreciation of artworks, community members can share mutual experiences and foster empathy. Learning visual language offers an alternative means of expression, one that does not rely solely on spoken and written forms. By researching and developing art education programs for children from multicultural families, with a focus on enhancing communication, understanding, expression, and self-efficacy through art, we can contribute to providing equal education opportunities and fostering the development of a more inclusive society. This paper presents an art education program specifically designed for children from multicultural families living in culturally marginalized areas, where access to art is limited, and proficiency in Korean is not yet developed. The program emphasizes the appreciation and creation of art using visual language, while minimizing the reliance on theoretical explanations and learning based on spoken and written language.
The study yields the following results. Firstly, various methods of expression, grounded in the utilization of visual language, are introduced to establish a theoretical framework and propose ways to develop art education for children from multicultural families. This approach aims to facilitate the appreciation of artworks, enhance understanding, and naturally cultivate self-expression through visual activities and aesthetic experiences. By adopting this approach, we anticipate being able to provide cultural and arts education to children from multicultural families who have recently arrived in the country. Secondly, this paper explores and recommends art programs that utilize the exhibition format as a means of communication with local residents. Exhibitions held at local educational and cultural institutions will provide opportunities for participating children to express themselves, while the exhibition space will serve as a channel for communication among artists, artworks, and audiences, facilitated through the medium of art. In conclusion, this paper addresses methodologies to ensure that art is enjoyed and serves as a means of communication for all, without excluding any segment of the population. It is essential to minimize the marginalization of specific groups in a society where understanding and appreciating culture and art have become natural. It is my hope that these topics will continue to be discussed, enabling individuals to understand and communicate with one another based on culture and art.
