The purpose of this study is to examine the changing process of young children, who exhibit social emotional challenging behavior while experiencing child-centered play therapy and cognitive behavioral play therapy. The study set the following research question. Research Question: In what process do young children who exhibit social emotional challenging behavior change while experiencing child-centered play therapy and cognitive behavioral play therapy? The study employed a case study method as a qualitative methodology and set the clinical field of play therapy as a research venue, investigating the experiences and meanings of the changing process of young children in a clinical case study to apply an integrative approach between child-centered play therapy and cognitive behavioral play therapy to research participants referred mainly for their social emotional challenging behavior. The research site of the study was a play counseling center in G Province. Two young children exhibiting social emotional challenging behavior participated in integrative play therapy that combined child-centered play therapy and cognitive behavioral play therapy once a week with the researcher. Children A and B participated in 40 and 32 40-minute play therapy sessions, respectively. Their mothers had parent counseling for 10~15 minutes after play therapy. The study collected overall data about the backgrounds of the participating children for their social emotional challenging behavior and applied an integrative approach between child-centered play therapy and cognitive behavioral play therapy under the goal of improving their social and affective problematic behavior, gathering materials to analyze their experiences and changes. The data collection and analysis procedures happened as follows: the researcher consulted the interpretations of parents' records about their young children, mainly on their social and affective problematic behavior, after each session to figure out the meanings of their current behavioral changes. The study collected and analyzed intake interview forms filled out by the parents before play therapy, session journals containing records about the play therapy process of each session, counseling records and recordings with the parents after play therapy, videotapes of play scenes in each play therapy process, and supervision records and applied the results to the next session. Additionally, the researcher conducted a pre- and post-test on the social emotional challenging behavior of the young children and analyzed collected quantitative materials and projective test results. The analysis of materials led to the discovery of important topics occurring throughout the entire process of applying an integrative approach between child-centered play therapy and cognitive behavioral play therapy, and the topics were categorized in the process from the referral of Participants A and B for their social emotional challenging behavior to the conclusion. Based on the semantic units of changes shown by Children A and B exhibiting social emotional challenging behavior while experiencing an integrative approach between child- centered play therapy and cognitive behavioral play therapy, the study identified 25 semantic units, eight subcategories, and three categories for Child A. The three categories of Child A include "difficulties with separating from Mom," "play as a facilitator of separation," and "separation anxiety that has been resolved." The analysis process identified 27 semantic units, nine subcategories, and three categories for Child B. The three categories of Child B include "having both stuttering and blinking," "accumulation of success experiences amid repeated play," and "enhanced self-esteem after stuttering and blinking symptoms are gone." Child A had the biggest reduction in internalization, which was A's biggest issue and lowered emotional reaction, somatic complaint, and attention problems to the normal scope. Moreover, A's development was normal evenly across the areas of development. Child B reduced externalization, emotional reaction, and attention problems from the clinical scope to the normal scope and also self-help skills from the delayed development scope to the normal scope. In short, the findings of the study imply that the careful selection and integrated implementation of a proper play therapy approach fit for the characteristics of each issue and can bring changes to the social emotional challenging behavior of young children as the causes of their social emotional challenging behavior have been proven diverse. It is also implied that the application of an integrative approach between child-centered play therapy and cognitive behavioral play therapy to the social emotional challenging behavior of young children can promote more effective changes than a single play therapy approach. The study conducted a profound inquiry into emotional reactions, one of the internalization issues under social emotional challenging behavior with two participants A and B. Both the children had emotional reaction issues, but the study found that they should not be included in the group of anxiety issues and assessed based on their consequent actions. Both A and B reduced their issues with emotional reactions initially reported by their parents. Empirical research cannot examine the causes and changes of young children's social and affective problematic behavior as specifically as this, and the present study supplemented this limitation with clinical case research and thus holds its significance. The findings of the study are expected to resolve the difficulties of teachers in instructing young children with problematic behavior in the field of early childhood education and promote the understanding of an effective play therapy approach according to the social emotional challenging behavior symptoms of young children in the clinical field of play therapy for young children.
