This study aims to examine the relationship between management performance and the mediating effect of consumer perception in the context of chicken franchise companies implementing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management activities. The research focuses on seven domestic chicken franchise companies engaged in ESG practices. A survey was conducted from January 30 to March 20, 2023, targeting executives and employees of franchisees associated with these companies. A total of 334 valid responses were collected and analyzed using various statistical methods. The findings of the study reveal several significant results. First, all sub-factors related to the environment, society, and governance within the ESG management activities of chicken franchise companies were found to have a significant impact on financial performance. Second, these same sub-factors were also found to have a significant effect on non-financial performance. Third, a causal relationship was observed between the three sub-factors of ESG management activities in chicken franchises and financial performance, with consumer perception mediating this relationship for all sub-factors. Fourth, a similar causal relationship was found between the three ESG sub-factors and non-financial performance, with consumer perception acting as a mediating factor. Fifth, a causal relationship between the three ESG sub-factors and financial performance was established, and it was confirmed that social and governance factors, excluding environmental factors, mediated the relationship in terms of organizational effectiveness. Sixth, a similar causal relationship was observed between the ESG sub-factors and non-financial performance, with social and governance factors, excluding environmental factors, acting as mediators for organizational effectiveness. Regarding the implications of the research results, the following points are highlighted: First, ESG management activities conducted by chicken franchise companies are often seen as part of their social responsibility initiatives. Therefore, it is necessary to establish policies that encourage more active engagement in environmental issues. While the significant relationship between ESG management activities and business performance has been confirmed, the mediating role of environmental factors has not been established. Hence, it is important to develop sincere management activities and environmental policies that can strengthen consumer awareness. Second, chicken franchise companies should establish and implement strategies to enhance consumer awareness of their ESG management activities. As the study results indicate, there was no mediating effect on consumer recognition. Therefore, effective strategies need to be established to ensure that consumers, who play a direct role in evaluating the market, are aware of these activities. Ultimately, the fundamental reason for implementing ESG management activities is to strengthen the company's social role. A company that is perceived negatively by consumers may experience a decline in business performance, potentially leading to its exit from the market. In light of recent incidents where chicken franchises faced backlash due to price increases and delivery fees, it is crucial for franchises entering overseas markets to focus on rebuilding trust by strengthening ESG management activities as part of their relationship-building efforts with consumers. Third, in addition to consumer awareness, which represents the external environment, chicken franchise companies need to make efforts to enhance organizational effectiveness from an internal perspective. The research findings indicate that organizational effectiveness acts as a mediator in the relationship between ESG management activities and business performance. Organizational effectiveness refers to the process of achieving performance aligned with organizational goals. Strengthening this process is essential for achieving desired outcomes. Given the nature of the franchise model, it is important to establish reasonable management guidelines that foster trust and collaboration between the head office and franchisees. Establishing internal systems to monitor eco-friendly activities, ensure transparency in corporate governance, and facilitate communication among stakeholders such as shareholders, employees, and customers is crucial to foster organizational effectiveness. Fourth, chicken franchises have the potential to redefine the direction and operational strategy of ESG management in the future. ESG management activities are not only effective in maximizing shareholder value but also in enhancing customer satisfaction. Among the ESG factors, the environment (E) was found to have the most significant impact on improving customer satisfaction, highlighting the importance of eco-friendly initiatives. Previously, ESG management was limited to specific departments or used solely as an investor relations (IR) tool. However, it is now necessary to establish an integrated ESG management strategy that involves all customer-facing departments and customer service staff. ESG management should not be solely viewed as an IR tool but rather as a means to enhance corporate image and actively utilize it for public relations (PR) to create customer value and satisfaction. In conclusion, the research findings emphasize the need for chicken franchise companies to actively engage in ESG management activities, with a focus on environmental issues, consumer awareness, and organizational effectiveness. By doing so, these franchises can redefine the direction and strategies of ESG management, ultimately leading to improved business performance and customer satisfaction. Given the popularity of chicken franchises and the positive response they receive from consumers in Korea, it is crucial for these businesses to prioritize ESG management activities in order to achieve competitive advantage and overall business performance. Furthermore, recognizing the importance of ESG practices and implementing effective measures in both the head office and franchise locations are vital management strategies.
