With the rapid increase in the older adult population, the problems related to older adults are also growing. Among these issues, older adult depression is recognized as a significant problem that can lead to physical, psychological, and social problems. Additionally, the increase in older adults living alone, which possess vulnerabilities in areas such as physical and mental health due to the absence of family caregiving, has become an important social issue. Based on previous studies, this research identified that various technological interventions, including the use of the internet and computers, can have a positive impact on alleviating depression in older adults. Accordingly, this study aimed to compare and analyze the influence of technology utilization on depression in older adults living alone versus non-living alone. To achieve this goal, data from a survey conducted by the Korean Association of Comprehensive Senior Welfare Centers' "HOME Welfare Center" were utilized. The analysis included a total of 816 older adult participants who took part in the post-survey of the "HOME Welfare Center," consisting of 347 older adults living alone and 469 older adults living with others. The research model was validated through frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, T-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 20.0. The results of the analysis are as follows. Firstly, to examine the sociodemographic characteristics of the two groups, older adults living alone and non-living alone, frequency analysis and descriptive statistics were conducted. Both groups had a slightly higher proportion of females. The average age of older adults living alone was significantly higher than that of non-living alone. In terms of the residential area, metropolitan cities had the highest proportion, followed by eastern regions and rural areas, with a higher percentage of non-living alone residing in metropolitan cities and a higher percentage of older adults living alone residing in rural areas. In terms of education level, the proportion of older adults living alone with elementary school or below, middle school, and high school education was higher compared to those non-living alone. Regarding economic activity, both groups had a relatively high proportion of individuals engaged in work. Secondly, descriptive statistics and T-tests were conducted to examine the characteristics of depression and technology utilization in the groups of older adults living alone and non-living alone. The level of depression was higher in the group of older adults living alone, while the level of technology utilization was lower compared to the group of older adults non-living alone. T-tests revealed significant differences between the two groups in terms of depression and technology utilization. Thirdly, to determine the correlation between technology utilization and depression in older adults, as well as the correlation among control variables such as gender, age, residential area, education level, and economic activity, correlation analysis was conducted. Significant correlations between depression and technology utilization were found among the overall participants and the group of older adults non-living alone. Furthermore, multicollinearity tests indicated no issues. Finally, multiple regression analysis was performed to analyze the relationship between technology utilization and depression in older adults. The results confirmed that technology utilization is a factor influencing depression among the entire older adult population. Additionally, when examining the relationship between technology utilization and depression in each group, significant associations were found. Apart from technology utilization, age was identified as a factor influencing depression in the group of older adults living alone, while education level was a significant factor in the group of older adults non-living alone. Based on the findings of this study, it was verified that higher levels of technology utilization among older adults are associated with lower levels of depression, thus highlighting the need for policies and programs to enhance technology utilization for the improvement of older adult depression. Considering that older adults living alone exhibit lower levels of technology utilization and higher levels of depression compared to older adults non-living alone, there is a necessity for active interventions and differentiated programs that target technology utilization specifically for older adults living alone. This study is expected to serve as empirical evidence for the development and implementation of policies and practical interventions aimed at preventing.
