With the growing social interest in ESG (Environment, Social, Governance)—which stands for eco-friendliness (E), socially responsible management (S), and governance improvement (G)—companies are trying to become more socially responsible and sustainable entities. The importance of ESG management is likely to increase as companies are expected to play greater roles and ESG becomes an integral part of their survival. Therefore, it appears imperative to explore what companies—whose prime goal is to make a profit—can gain from adopting ESG management, so they can operate to support the environmental, social, and individual well-being. As such, this study examined from the airline passengers’ viewpoint the impacts of ESG management on corporate image and corporate trust, which then may influence relationship continuation intention. By doing so, the study intended to suggest how airline companies can utilize ESG management as a tool to enhance their sustainability and competitiveness. To address the study objectives, this study sampled individuals who had used South Korean airline companies and surveyed their opinions on airline companies’ESG management, corporate image, corporate trust, and relationship continuation intention. The following was found from empirical analysis. First, ESG management had a significant positive impact on corporate image. Specifically, G was the most influential factor followed by S and E. Second, ESG management positively influenced corporate trust, indicating its indispensability to corporate competitiveness. Again, the order of impact size was G, S, and then E. Third, corporate image and corporate trust exerted positive impacts on relationship continuation intention, supporting their importance in encouraging airline passengers to continue flying with the airline companies. This study has the following academic implications. Firstly, by demonstrating the positive impacts that ESG management has on airline companies’corporate image and trust, this study revealed the importance of ESG management in the airline industry. Secondly, this study showed that for airline companies to develop long-lasting relationships with their passengers it is crucial to use active business strategies to secure corporate image and corporate trust. The findings also provide the following practical meaning. Airline companies should actively promote their ESG management initiatives so that their passengers become aware of environmental, social, and governance transparency efforts. In addition, airline companies should also act more responsibly about environmental issues such as CO2 and greenhouse gase missions. Lastly, airline companies must enhance corporate image and corporate trust to maintain their relationships with their passengers.
