The use of short-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and alternative substances is increasing due to the regulation that ban the use of long-chain PFAS. It has been confirmed that the short-chain PFAS and alternatives have high mobility, which results in their frequent detection in water and pose a risk of human exposure. Therefore, in this study, the occurrence and distribution of a total of 42 PFAS compounds, including 6 newly added PFAS alternatives and 19 precursor compounds, were investigated in raw and treated water from drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) located in the Nakdong River basin. As a result, 22 PFAS compounds were detected in raw and treated water. Short-chain PFAS showed predominant distribution in raw and treated water. 6:2 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (6:2 FTCA), Methyl perfluorooctanesulfonamidoethanol (MeFOSE), and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (Gen-X) were prominent substances found in raw water, with detected concentrations exceeding 40% of the detection frequency (DF>40%), and for the first time in Korea. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was conducted based on PFAS concentrations in raw water to examine the differences of their distribution according to sampling sites and types of water sources. Three groups were identified: DWTPs with low concentrations, DWTPs with riverbank filtrated water, and DWTPs with river and blended water. During the water treatment processes, 6:2 FTCA (mean 66.9%) and MeFOSE (mean 92.6%) exhibited good removal rates. However, Gen-X (mean 6.08%) had a negligible removal rate, posing challenges for its removal in DWTPs. The removal efficiencies observed in each process were consistent with previous studies, indicating that the adsorption process is the most effective for PFAS removal. Additionally, investigation of the adsorption capacity of emerging PFAS on activated carbon revealed that the adsorption capacity of Gen-X (mean -3.62%) was low compared to that of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA; mean 24.5%) it is replacing and Perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA; mean 2.60%).
